Key benefits

  • Learn Well-Architected Framework from a cloud solution architect and an official Microsoft trainer
  • Optimize your workloads in Azure by following Microsoft recommended best practices
  • Use reference architecture and Microsoft tests to conduct Well-Architected Framework (WAF) assessment

Description

It’s easy to learn and deploy resources in Microsoft Azure, without worrying about resource optimization. However, for production or mission critical workloads, it’s crucial that you follow best practices for resource deployment to attain security, reliability, operational excellence and performance. Apart from these aspects, you need to account for cost considerations, as it’s the leading reason for almost every organization’s cloud transformation. In this book, you’ll learn to leverage Microsoft Well-Architected Framework to optimize your workloads in Azure. This Framework is a set of recommended practices developed by Microsoft based on five aligned pillars; cost optimization, performance, reliability, operational excellence, and security. You’ll explore each of these pillars and discover how to perform an assessment to determine the quality of your existing workloads. Through the book, you’ll uncover different design patterns and procedures related to each of the Well-Architected Framework pillars. By the end of this book, you’ll be well-equipped to collect and assess data from an Azure environment and perform the necessary upturn of your Azure workloads.

Who is this book for?

This book is for developers, cloud solution architects, cloud administrators, and professionals experienced in design, implementation, and management of Azure resources. Professionals looking to learn cloud optimization or switch to a new role related to architecture can benefit from this book. An intermediate level understanding of the Microsoft Azure platform and services is a must. Experience in implementing or designing solutions in Azure is a plus but not mandatory.

What you will learn

  • Dive deep into the Azure Well-Architected Framework
  • Explore the differences between Cloud Adoption Framework and Well-Architected Framework
  • Understand the pillars of the Well-Architected Framework
  • Discover varied techniques to improve the cost profile of your workload
  • Optimize your workflows using Azure Advisor and its score
  • Plan and prioritize the implementation of security recommendations from WAF assessments

Author does a fantastic job of breaking down complex concepts into digestible, easy-to-understand explanations. The real-world examples and hands-on exercises provided throughout the book make it an engaging learning experience. The book covers a wide range of topics, including AZURE Workload Optimization, and it's clear that the author possesses a deep understanding of the subject matter. One of the standout features of the book is its practical approach. It not only explains theoretical concepts but also guides readers on how to apply them in real-world scenarios. The step-by-step tutorials and case studies are especially beneficial in this regard.

Packt Publishing’s Optimizing Microsoft Azure Workloads by Rithin Skaria is an excellent guide for working within Microsoft Azure and optimizing costs and performance. This book expands upon the Azure Well-Architected Framework and Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework on Azure with helpful guidance. The tips and tricks provided for financial operations, performance and reliability, and security and assessment of resources creates a handbook for anyone that is working within Azure. I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in understanding how to leverage best practices and perform with the optimal benefits of the cloud.

Right from the start, the image on page 1 is truly eye-catching. The Table of Contents is excellently laid out, and I appreciated the inclusion of 'Other Books You May Enjoy.' The book boasts a plethora of well-chosen pictures that serve as visual aids to enhance the understanding of the topics discussed. The summaries provided at the end of each chapter were a nice touch.Page 60 stands out for its valuable information on resizing VMs to optimize costs. I found it commendable that the book offers numerous Microsoft links, allowing readers to quickly delve deeper into specific topics for further learning. On page 78, the book does an excellent job explaining the different roles for Cost Management, underscoring the importance of configuring access correctly—a vital aspect of cloud management. What sets this book apart is that the author not only imparts great information but also delves into the 'how to' of various concepts.A few points for consideration:In the preface on page xi, the stated audience is for architects and administrators rather than FinOps professionals. On page 10, the section on Azure Advisor provides a brief yet informative overview. The section on Application Architecture Fundamentals on page 14, with its illustrative diagram of architectural choices, may also be applicable to Cloud Management Platforms (CMP).The discussion on Design Principles, starting on page 16, spanning multiple pages, is a valuable resource for making architectural decisions. The section on Allocating Resources Dynamically, from page 56 onwards, offers insightful scenarios for dynamic resource allocation. On page 65, the Cost Design Checklist emphasizes the use of Azure Policy to enforce resource tagging. The Cost Monitoring Checklist on page 72 provides a good overview of cost monitoring and the use of Azure tools. However, the coverage of Cost Optimization on page 84 is somewhat slim, with only a brief mention of topics like Reserved Instances (RIs) and Savings Plans.Chapter 4, starting on page 89, appears to be focused primarily on developers and IT Ops staff. In Chapter 5, 'Improving Applications with Performance Efficiency' from page 115 onwards, there is a mention of Right-Sizing and Scaling. The section on Monitoring, beginning on page 127, is particularly valuable, and Figure 5.1 is a noteworthy inclusion. In Chapter 7, 'Leveraging the Security Pillar,' I would recommend adding more discussion on various Microsoft Azure security features, such as Defender for Cloud, Defender for SQL, and Defender for Storage.Lastly, in Chapter 8, on page 189, the table of Reference Workload is a helpful reference.

In the real world, optimizing cloud workloads is pivotal for cost efficiency, top-notch performance, seamless scalability, resource maximization, stringent security, compliance adherence, and robust disaster recovery. Rithin Skaria's well-structured book masterfully navigates through these challenging realms, providing a comprehensive guide. As someone who recently delved into the 'Azure Cloud Adoption Framework Handbook' by Darren Dempsey and Sasa Kovacevic, stumbling upon this gem was truly serendipitous. Congratulations, Rithin Skaria, for delivering an invaluable resource!
