Summary
In this chapter, we discussed in-situ or onsite environment monitoring and its purpose and importance in the bigger picture of an intelligent enterprise. We then undertook a journey into the means of their implementation through sensors, types, and selection criteria. The current integration ecosystem and protocols were also discussed while foraying into two interesting industrial use cases that presented a solid case for monitoring.
In summary, we discussed the fundamentals of the DIKW model, from which humble data transforms itself into intelligence, enabling stakeholders to optimize their systems efficiently. Data is a set of random, seemingly non-correlating signals from physical systems. When given context, data becomes structured, organized, and valuable information. When given meaning or context, information becomes knowledge that reveals patterns and synthesized behaviors from history. When armed with more insight, knowledge becomes intelligence or wisdom, which...
