Reviewing your media
You probably already know that the spacebar performs the crucial play/pause function, but there's a lot more to reviewing media than that. Skimming is a critical skill, and the Viewer has many subtle controls too. Let's begin by finding out why you shouldn't click so much.
Skimming is awesome
Probably the first habit that most editors need to break when shifting to FCP is that of clicking. There's simply no need to click on a clip before playing it back, and in fact, it can cause issues if that click turns into an accidental drag and changes the current selection. Instead, simply hover your cursor over a clip's filmstrip, just before a particular moment, then press the spacebar.
FCP actually has two ways to indicate a position in time: the Playhead and the Skimmer. Over a clip's filmstrip in the Browser, you'll see the following:
