Agility as a journey and not a destination
Just like good health needs maintenance after achieving it, enterprises need to be able to sustain agility after achieving optimal agility. Moreover, given that the pace of change is expected to increase further, the state of sustenance may only be transient. To add to this, the ecosystem around businesses is a CAS, which will continue to evolve. This may mean that the enterprise may need new capabilities that are underlying agility or may have to further enhance the existing capabilities.
Complacency in adding or enhancing capabilities can result in enterprises facing the sustainability gap, which was discussed in Chapter 3, Enterprise as a Living System. Agility is, therefore, not a destination but a journey that does not have an end.
