Data Center Virtualization Certification: VCP6.5-DCV Exam Guide

Configure and Administer vSphere 6.x Networking

Virtual networking is quite important for a virtualized environment—due to the isolation pillar of the system virtualization, the VMs can communicate with each other (and with the rest of the world) only through the network.

VMware vSphere virtual networking has several important concepts, but they are well explained in this document: https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/virtual_networking_concepts.pdf.

Starting from version 4.0, there are two different types of virtual switches:

  • Standard virtual switches (vSS): Available in all ESXi editions, including the free edition
  • Distributed virtual switches (vDS or also DVS): Available only with Enterprise Plus edition or bounded with VMware vSAN or NSX licenses
Practicing what you learn during the chapter is a key point to enforce your skills...

Objective 2.1 – Configure policies/features and verify vSphere networking

This chapter is about the vDS switches and their functionalities. Some concepts are also valid for vSS, but the exam preparation seems to prefer the vDS-related questions. Note that the standard VMware vSphere Install & Configuration course does not cover vDS!

The vDS is based on these elements:

  • The vDS itself: It contains some configuration parameters and some monitoring features and also contains the following elements:
    • Uplink Port Group: This is the physical connection to the physical switches. Each uplink will correspond to a physical NIC on each host member of the vDS.
    • Distributed Port Group: This is the virtual connection and provides the network connectivity for all VMs and for the ESXi VMkernel adapters.
For more information, see the KB 1010555 (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1010555...

Objective 2.2 – Configuring Network I/O control (NIOC)

VMware vSphere Network I/O Control (NIOC) is a network resource control engine used to provide quality of service (QoS) capabilities to VDS; usually, it's used to guarantee the network bandwidth or manage this in a proper way for business-critical applications (or for VMkernel traffic) and to resolve situations where several types of traffic compete for common resources.

Objective 2.2 for VCP65-DCV and VCP6-DCV is exactly the same because there weren't big changes in networking from vSphere 6.0 to vSphere 6.5.

The vSphere 6.5 Networking guide contains in-depth pieces of information about networking capabilities and configurations: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-652-networking-guide.pdf.

...

What is missing

The official VCP65-DCV Exam Preparation Guide covers a lot of security topics, but the vSphere 6.5 Networking guide is definitely more rich, with more contents.

For example, the following aspects are not considered in the preparation guide:

Review questions

For more questions, see Chapter 11, Mock Exam 1, and Chapter 12, Mock Exam 2:

  1. What are the right requirements for removing a host from a vDS? (Choose three.)
    • A: Verify that physical NICs on the target hosts are migrated to a different switch
    • B: Verify that VMkernel adapters on the hosts are migrated to a different switch
    • C: Verify that virtual machine network adapters are migrated to a different switch
    • D: Verify the license of the host
    • E: Verify the vDS version

ABC - See Objective 2.1

  1. With NIOC, is it possible to set network reservations and limits at VM level?
    • A: Yes, but only with NIOC v3
    • B: Yes, always
    • C: No, only at network resource pool
    • D: No, never

A - See Objective 2.2

Summary

This chapter was dedicated to virtual networking, both with standard and distributed virtual switches, and covered the design, management, and optimization of the virtual network.

Virtual networking concepts were covered, both with standard and distributed virtual switches. Also, there were some considerations about the design, the management, and the optimization of virtual networks.

However, there are new network trends, including Network Virtualization (NV), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Software-defined Networking (SDS) solutions and products. VMware NSX is an NV solution that could really improve a vSphere environment, not only in terms of networking, but also by adding a lot of new functions (using NFV), especially for security.

Chapter 3, Configure and Administer vSphere 6.x Storage, and its objectives will check your knowledge of the storage aspects...

Key benefits

  • Implement advanced network virtualization techniques
  • Configure and administer vSphere high availability
  • Enhance your data center virtualization skills with practice questions and mock tests

Description

This exam guide enables you to install, configure, and manage the vSphere 6.5 infrastructure in all its components: vCenter Server, ESXi hosts, and virtual machines, while helping you to prepare for the industry standard certification. This data center book will assist you in automating administration tasks and enhancing your environment’s capabilities. You will begin with an introduction to all aspects related to security, networking, and storage in vSphere 6.5. Next, you will learn about resource management and understand how to back up and restore the vSphere 6.5 infrastructure. As you advance, you will also cover troubleshooting, deployment, availability, and virtual machine management. This is followed by two mock tests that will test your knowledge and challenge your understanding of all the topics included in the exam. By the end of this book, you will not only have learned about virtualization and its techniques, but you’ll also be prepared to pass the VCP6.5-DCV (2V0-622) exam.

Who is this book for?

If you are interested in achieving Data Center Virtualization certification, this is the book is for you. You will also benefit from this book if you are a system administrator or network engineer. Some prior knowledge of virtualization can assist you in understanding key concepts covered in the book.

I used this to study for the VCP 6.5 Delta exam. I've held a VCP certification for over 8 years, and almost always utilize a book to assist my studies. I also work with VMware products every day at my day job. Being the only book on the market at this time (Dec. 2018) I went with this one.Don't get me wrong, this book has a lot of good information in it, but it is very clear that there was little to no editing done throughout the book - to the point where it's overly distracting from the content. Incomplete/incorrect sentences, blatant copy+pasting throughout chapters, repeating info multiple times, mis-spellings, content with zero context, and (possibly the worst) multiple answers to the practice test are completely wrong.I had high hopes for this book, but it unfortunately missed the mark. I found more benefits from some of the free online blogs and study guides.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
