Over 20 years of SharePoint
Microsoft SharePoint is already an over-20-year-old product. SharePoint started at the end of the 1990s as codename Tahoe, and the first versions under the SharePoint brand were released in 2001, called SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and SharePoint Team Services. The next releases followed the update cadence of Microsoft Office:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 in 2003
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 in 2007
- Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 in 2010
- Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 in 2013
- Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016 in 2016
- Microsoft SharePoint Server 2019 in 2019
- Microsoft SharePoint Server Subscription Edition in 2021
These SharePoint Server versions were and are hosted in the customer’s data center and are quite often referred to as on-premises SharePoint in discussions.
