Traditional internships
This chapter has covered some less traditional ways that someone new to a career in CSA can accelerate gaining experience, but for those for whom it is available, the value of a traditional internship should not be ignored. In a typical internship experience, students spend time working with an employer to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. In addition to reinforcing what is being learned in the classroom, interns also gain the benefit of being exposed to a work setting, which can be very different than that of a university.
Some of the benefits that are gained by participating in an internship program are as follows:
- Many internships offer the opportunity to earn while learning
- Interns get the opportunity to demonstrate what value they could bring to an employer without dealing with the stigma of being inexperienced
- Internship experience may ease a student’s transition to office life
