Who uses APIs?

APIs aren’t used exclusively by developers. More than half of API users have roles unrelated to software development. According to the 2022 State of the API Report published by Postman, Inc., a survey of about 40,000 API professionals revealed that the most representative non-developer roles sum up more than 20%. Another similar report published by RapidAPI corroborates this by showing that only 80% of the respondents have a developer role. Additionally, API users come from a variety of industries. While technology companies occupy the largest share of API users, other industries, such as education, healthcare, and banking, represent about 20%, according to the reports mentioned previously.

APIs are not something reserved for developers and the technology industry. It’s interesting that most people building APIs still focus on developers as their only users. Instead, as an API builder, you should start exploring the other roles that can also be users...
