Exploring Maslow’s theory in the context of CIOs and CISOs
Maslow’s theory proposes that humans are motivated to fulfill needs in a specific order. The hierarchy is depicted as a pyramid, with the most basic needs at the bottom and the most difficult needs at the top, as shown in the following diagram.

The five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are as follows:
- Physiological needs: These are the most basic human needs (e.g., food, water, clothing, and shelter)
- Safety: This includes security, stability, and protection from harm
- Belonging: This includes intimacy, friendship, and a sense of belonging to a group
- Esteem: This includes a sense of achievement, self-respect, and confidence
- Self-actualization: The highest level, with the need to live a meaningful life and reach your full potential
