Internationalization and localization
Do you ever wonder how on-the-fly translations work... or maybe don’t? Do you wonder if the menu items you have worked so hard on the design for will appear correctly if they are translated into Korean, Thai, or Arabic? If questions like this keep you up at night, there may be an internationalization or localization testing role in your future. Seriously, though, what are these two areas and what do they mean?
Internationalization (often abbreviated as i18n) refers to the process of designing software products so that they can be adapted to different languages, cultures, and regions. This involves ensuring that the software can handle different character sets, date and time formats, currency symbols, and other cultural conventions. Essentially, internationalization involves making the software “global-ready.”
