Why do we need remote monitoring?
Remote system monitoring is the ability to monitor the behavior of a system located far from the user in a systematic and quantifiable manner. Remote monitoring has been enabled through the availability of operational data and in-situ sensor data in a centralized platform. Remote monitoring not only replaces manual intensive processes of recording system behavior and reacting to breakdowns after the incident has occurred to a more proactive and preventive approach in terms of service and maintenance. When the systems of interest are furthermore located at really remote locations (very far-off and inaccessible locations), this becomes a savior guaranteeing the continuation of operations.
The importance, relevance, and absolute necessity for remote monitoring comes to the fore with the following practical user journeys, as showcased in Figure 11.1.
