Mobile devices
The mobile device space represents such a huge segment that encompasses numerous vendors and numerous different device types. It is not the intent of this chapter to discuss all the nuances of this segment. Instead, for the purpose of this chapter, we will focus on what we believe to be the biggest and most prominent segment within the mobile space — smartphones and tablets.
From a software perspective, there are two categories of applications, which enable interaction with these devices — native device applications and web applications.
Native device applications are developed utilizing the specific software development kit (SDK) created and supported by the vendors of such devices. These applications are extremely rich and utilize the full set of features available in each of these devices. Some of these features include still camera, video recording, GPS locator device, voice activated applications, and so on.
