Hands-On Domain-Driven Design with .NET Core

Language and Context

In the previous chapter, we discussed the importance of language briefly. In the software industry, we developed this naïve perception that the only languages that matter are programming languages. That's why we often speak complete gibberish and our colleagues from other departments, or our customers, have a hard time understanding what we're trying to say. This issue is mutual because many lines of business have developed their jargon, which other people might not completely understand.

In this chapter, we're going to go deeper into the importance of language and go through several examples of mockups and code. We'll also get into the concept of language in a context and introduce the Ubiquitous Language, one of the most critical aspects of Domain-Driven Design (DDD).

In this chapter, we'll go deeper into the following topics...

Ubiquitous Language

It isn't a coincidence that the website of Eric Evans, the author of the original DDD book, is located at http://domainlanguage.com. Fundamental concepts of DDD, such as Ubiquitous Language and Bounded Context, are both based on the idea of language. It might sound strange to those who haven't spent many years developing software because, for less experienced developers, the only language that's important is a programming language. We learn to program usually by studying some concepts and applying them to practice using one of the programming languages. We think that we can translate a human language into a programming language, and this is the essence of our work. There's some degree of truth there indeed. However, this is by far not the essential part of the developer's daily routine.

Two people can understand each other only if they...

Language and context

In the introduction of this chapter, we already touched on the topic of linguistic differences in the same language. If one language is divided by some boundary, be it a geographical, national, or professional area, it starts to split. We used British and American English as an example before, but of course, there are more examples like this. Dutch language spoken in Belgium is often even referred to as a separate language, Flemish because it sounds different, but mainly because, for everyday objects and actions, different words are being used. The same can be observed for languages that evolve within professional groups where people develop jargon, and we've looked at some examples of this too.

These examples were presented here to demonstrate how important it is to define the precise meaning of words. Avoiding confusion is indeed one of the goals in...

Summary

In this chapter, we discussed the importance of language in system design and how precise and unambiguous terminology brings clarity. We also have a shared understanding of the domain for business people and developers. We also looked at how different industries use the same words to express different concepts and what consequences this has on domain modeling.

The code sample in this chapter showed how unclear language could make the implementation more complicated and less understandable. By introducing better language to the code, we made it much clearer and shorter and more concise. We made some implicit concepts more explicit, and it helped to get a better understanding of the business and improved the code quality. We also discovered many verbs that became part of the language, which is an essential addition to a glossary of nouns that are often seen as the only important...

Key benefits

  • Apply DDD principles using modern tools such as EventStorming, Event Sourcing, and CQRS
  • Learn how DDD applies directly to various architectural styles such as REST, reactive systems, and microservices
  • Empower teams to work flexibly with improved services and decoupled interactions

Description

Developers across the world are rapidly adopting DDD principles to deliver powerful results when writing software that deals with complex business requirements. This book will guide you in involving business stakeholders when choosing the software you are planning to build for them. By figuring out the temporal nature of behavior-driven domain models, you will be able to build leaner, more agile, and modular systems. You’ll begin by uncovering domain complexity and learn how to capture the behavioral aspects of the domain language. You will then learn about EventStorming and advance to creating a new project in .NET Core 2.1; you’ll also and write some code to transfer your events from sticky notes to C#. The book will show you how to use aggregates to handle commands and produce events. As you progress, you’ll get to grips with Bounded Contexts, Context Map, Event Sourcing, and CQRS. After translating domain models into executable C# code, you will create a frontend for your application using Vue.js. In addition to this, you’ll learn how to refactor your code and cover event versioning and migration essentials. By the end of this DDD book, you will have gained the confidence to implement the DDD approach in your organization and be able to explore new techniques that complement what you’ve learned from the book.

Who is this book for?

This book is for .NET developers who have an intermediate level understanding of C#, and for those who seek to deliver value, not just write code. Intermediate level of competence in JavaScript will be helpful to follow the UI chapters.

What you will learn

  • Discover and resolve domain complexity together with business stakeholders
  • Avoid common pitfalls when creating the domain model
  • Study the concept of Bounded Context and aggregate
  • Design and build temporal models based on behavior and not only data
  • Explore benefits and drawbacks of Event Sourcing
  • Get acquainted with CQRS and to-the-point read models with projections
  • Practice building one-way flow UI with Vue.js
  • Understand how a task-based UI conforms to DDD principles

One of the best technical books about DDD and Event Sourcing. Easy to read, easy to follow and made me think again about how I am developing software.

Clever engineering overall. I've adopted the DDD implementation used in this book for my own projects. Exposes you to useful technologies like document databases and a specialized event store. Event Sourcing is a very useful approach to DDD and a good introduction is given in this book. Source code is available online to complement the highlighted sections in the book, but may take a little effort to get running correctly.

If you want to write your software better then you need DDD.This book strikes a great balance with theory and practice. It covers Event Storming and Event Modelling with code examples, where there isn't a great deal of books that I have seen..I've red the blue book by Eric Evans and red book as well DDD Distilled by Vaughan Vernon as a Scott Millett on DDD.So I finished this Kindle version last night, although not executed the code as I didn't want that distraction. I've been reading it most evenings over the course of a week or two. I will be running the code over the next week or so and excited to get acquainted with EventStore by Greg Young. The book will confirm my thoughts on where we go wrong with writing software in the later chapters.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
