Technical requirements

iMovie is a free default application on macOS, but it might not come pre-installed on your Mac. If it’s not on your Mac, just head to the App Store and search for it. It’s vanishingly unlikely that iMovie imitators will make it past App Store security, but just to be sure, check that the app you’re downloading has Apple listed as the developer.

To have a consistent experience with this chapter (and going forward), you’ll need iMovie version 10.3.2 or newer installed. That update allowed Magic Movie and Storyboard projects from the mobile app to be imported into the macOS version. You can check which version of iMovie you have by selecting iMovie | About iMovie in the menu bar at the top of the desktop. Do familiarize yourself with the menu bar (Figure 4.1) if you haven’t already—we’ll be using menu commands a lot in the rest of this book:
