Adding user-based security using a user filter

We will begin our exploration of RLS options in Tableau by looking at how to create a user filter inside Tableau.

We will be creating our user filter in Tableau Desktop. Tableau Desktop will need to be connected to the Tableau Server or Cloud instance we used in the earlier exercises in this chapter. The user filter can only be created when Tableau Desktop is connected to retrieve a list of users:

Open Tableau Desktop and connect to data to start. Select To a File | Text file, find the Product Sales.csv file that we downloaded from GitHub, and click OK. We should now be on the data source page, as shown in Figure 11.21:
