Understanding when to use Kubernetes

Kubernetes has been around for a while now as a container orchestration platform that adds several automation capabilities to container-based deployments. It was initially designed by Google and then released to the open source world in 2014. It is a powerful system that's capable of autoscaling (horizontally), auto-repairing, and automating how containers are managed and deployed while providing controlled rollouts and rollbacks. It's a beast of a system and, for that reason, not the easiest thing to work with and set up on your own infrastructure (although this has been gradually changing).
