The power of block patterns
There are several benefits of block patterns. The first is simply that it’s easier to think in larger sections than a block. When you consider a visual site, you think of visual sections, not the small block sections – for example, a feature content bucket pattern across a page, or anything else you want. Because these are larger visual sections, they build up faster to create the site.
It is important to distinguish between patterns and templates, though.
If you were to think of the hierarchy, it would be as follows:
- Blocks: The smallest content piece – for example, a paragraph or a quote
- Patterns: Collections of blocks – for example, a featured content area or a speaker list
- Templates: A full layout for an entire area – for example, a post or a page
