Determining and Inventorying Data Sources

After choosing to migrate to SharePoint Online, one of the first steps in building a migration strategy is to identify what data needs to be migrated. This can include the following:

  • Group- or team-networked file shares on file servers or network-attached storage
  • SharePoint Server document libraries and lists
  • SharePoint Server applications
  • SharePoint Server workflows
  • InfoPath forms
  • Intranet content

For each of these content types, you need to evaluate whether this content is fit to migrate to SharePoint Online or whether another product, service, or migration path may better support the business model. The following diagram shows potential data sources and targets:

Considerations must be made for how users currently interact with data and components, as well as business process and application support scenarios.
