Representational State Transfer (REST) is an architecture for software distributed hypertext systems such as the World Wide Web. The term REST was introduced in 2000 in the doctoral dissertation by one of the principal authors of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Roy Fielding, and was quickly adopted by the developer community on the Internet. The term REST is often used in the sense of describing any simple interface that transmits data over HTTP without an optional layer, such as SOAP or session management via cookies.
