Learning OpenDaylight

Overview of OpenDaylight

This chapter is about the OpenDaylight project and its components, history, and versions. It is a complex project based on multiple components that are tightly integrated. The aim of this chapter is to make you familiar with the architecture of OpenDaylight so you have a better understanding of how OpenDaylight works and the logic behind it.

We will learn the following topics here:

  • Overview of OpenDaylight components
  • OpenDaylight modules
  • The NeXt UI

Overview of OpenDaylight components

As discussed in Chapter 1, Introduction to SDN - Transformation from Legacy to SDN, ODL is a modular platform for software-defined networking. It is not a single piece of software; it's a combination of all integrated projects under one umbrella.

ODL has a board and chair persons; they decide the priority of each project.  This team consists of a group of developers or business leaders who sponsor projects and drive the need and motivation required to cater to specific requirements.

Each project has a project proposal; this is the first step when it comes to launching a feature in ODL.

The structure of ODL is similar to that of OpenStack. The difference is that OpenStack consists of different projects that are managed by different project groups.

The following map shows a high level view of ODL projects. We will look at each one of them so you can understand their features...

OpenDaylight modules

As learned earlier, OpenDaylight is a modular platform for integrating multiple plugins and modules. There are many plugins and modules built for OpenDaylight. Some are in production, while some are still under development. We have collected a list of important OpenDaylight modules here, and we will describe their functions.

Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting

Project type: Main

This is also referred to as triple A , It is an implementation of an enterprise-level identity provider for the OpenDaylight controller.

AAA projects have a larger domain that includes not only authenticating the users accessing the ODL web interface, but also acting as an identity provider for ODL. If you are familiar with OpenStack, you'd know that it...

The NeXt UI

NeXt is an ODL web interface for visualizing a network and the communication within this network. It's an open graphical tool that can show physical or virtual network elements, such as traffic, tunnel path, and groups and their attributes. Also, it can build a layered topology, for example, to show the overlay network over the underlay. It can work together with Dlux to build ODL apps.

NeXt is highly contributed by Cisco and you can find many enhancements of NeXt in Cisco DevNet.

The following image illustrates NeXt:

Summary

In this chapter, we learned about the details of components and modules of ODL. We learned that ODL has multiple modules where they are categorized into different verticals, such as management, networking, core, and security. I hope this chapter has given you an overview of what's going on under the hood of ODL. We haven't dived too deeply into modules yet; however, in the next chapter, we will learn how to use them and build our SDN application.

Also, in the next chapter, we will get our hands dirty by installing and deploying ODL; we will learn how to successfully install ODL Boron.

Description

OpenDaylight is an open source, software-defined network controller based on standard protocols. It aims to accelerate the adoption of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and create a solid foundation for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). SDN is a vast subject; many network engineers find it difficult to get started with using and operating different SDN platforms. This book will give you a practical bridge from SDN theory to the practical, real-world use of SDN in datacenters and by cloud providers. The book will help you understand the features and use cases for SDN, NFV, and OpenDaylight. NFV uses virtualization concepts and techniques to create virtual classes for node functions. Used together, SDN and NFV can elevate the standards of your network architecture; generic hardware-saving costs and the advanced and abstracted software will give you the freedom to evolve your network in the future without having to invest more in costly equipment. By the end of this book, you will have learned how to design and deploy OpenDaylight networks and integrate them with physical network switches. You will also have mastered basic network programming over the SDN fabric.

Who is this book for?

This book targets network engineers, network programmers and developers, administrators, and anyone with some level of networking experience who'd like to deploy OpenDayLight effectively. Familiarity with the day-to-day operations of computer networks is expected

What you will learn

  • Transition from legacy networking to software-defined networking
  • Learn how SDN controllers work and manage a network using southbound and northbound APIs
  • Learn how to deploy the OpenDayLight SDN controller and integrate it with virtual switches
  • Understand the basic design and operation of the OpenDaylight platform
  • Build simple MD-SAL OpenDaylight applications
  • Build applications on top of OpenDayLight to trigger network changes based on different events
  • Integrate OpenStack with OpenDayLight to build a fully managed network
  • Learn how to build a software-defined datacenter using NFV and service-chaining technologies

This book is a good read and can be used as a text to introduce Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and OpenDaylight. The book does not assume any prerequisite knowledge of SDN. So it is ideal for beginners. This also can be used as the primary text in the MSc level courses on SDN. This covers a vast area of knowledge on OpenDaylight ecosystem. It is self-containing, and can be a good companion read while you are offline or waiting for a flight in an airport.I was a technical reviewer of the book, and found it an interesting read.
