Using Segment Mode with the Smart Tool

While it is possible to have as many of the Smart Tool functions enabled as you like at any time, here we'll focus on just enabling the Segment Mode functions. And, just as with the Smart Tool trimming functions (discussed earlier), once the Segment Mode functions are enabled, they can be accessed in the Timeline, based on where you place your cursor. Let's take a closer look:

  • Within the Smart Tool, enable both the red Lift/Overwrite Segment Mode as well as the yellow Extract/Splice In Segment Mode. Note that enabling a function(s) within the Smart Tool also enables the Smart Tool itself. Use any of the methods described in the the Smart tool overview section to disable and/or re-enable the Smart Tool as a whole at any time.

  • When multiple Smart Tool functions are enabled, you access them directly in the Timeline based on where you place your cursor. Remember, in this example, we're discussing only the red Lift/Overwrite Segment Mode and the yellow Extract/Splice - In Segment Mode, though you can have any combination of functions enabled that you like.

    • Placing your cursor in the upper portion of a segment displays the Red Arrow, while placing it in the lower portion displays the Yellow Arrow (notice that the Smart Tool palette reminds you where to position your cursor in the Timeline by placing the red tools above the yellow tools)

    • Once you have displayed the tool you want (red arrow or yellow arrow), then click the mouse to engage it

    • There are additional Segment Mode tips next.
