The serverless framework
The serverless framework is precisely what the name suggests: a framework for developing and deploying serverless applications, and arguably the most popular one at that. This open source framework was created in 2015 and was initially called JavaScript Amazon Web Services (JAWS). In 2016, the serverless framework team rebooted their code with major changes and renamed it Serverless. They established Serverless Inc to drive the project as well as to provide commercial support and value-added services on top of the framework. The initial focus of the framework was on AWS serverless – understandably so since they were the primary players in the field and other cloud vendors were playing catch up. But they later extended the framework to support the serverless platforms of more cloud vendors.
