Let's take a step back. So far, we have discussed the basics of the IoT, which is basically our ordinary internet but with many more nodes than we might normally consider possible. We have also seen that in the next couple of years, the number of devices with internet capability in some form or another will keep on growing exponentially. Much of this growth will be in the machine-to-machine parts of the internet.
But is DevOps, with its focus on fast deliveries, really the right fit for large networks of critical embedded devices?
The classic counter-examples would be DevOps in a nuclear facility or in medical equipment, such as pacemakers. But just making faster releases isn't the core idea of DevOps. It's to make faster, more correct releases by bringing people working in different disciplines closer together.
