Preparing the Active Directory


As described in Chapter 1, Planning an Exchange Server 2013 Infrastructure, important updates to your Active Directory environment are required in order to be able to install Exchange 2013.

In short, the following two steps need to be completed:

  1. Extend the Active Directory Schema.

  2. Configure Exchange-specific groups and permissions.

We start by showing you how to perform these steps, followed by giving you some additional explanations on how to verify the Schema update ran fine for example.

Getting ready

Before continuing with the following steps outlined, you should understand what the impact extending your schema has on your organization.

To execute the following steps, you need to have the appropriate permissions. Depending on which command you run, this includes membership of:

  • Schema Admins

  • Enterprise Admins

  • Additionally, you should make sure that your Active Directory is healthy and replication is working flawlessly.
