Storage management, partitions, and mounting

In this section, we will dive into storage management by exploring its basics, formatting, and partition creation.

Storage

Storage can be internal (like an HDD or SSD on your machine), external (such as an HDD, SSD, or USB stick), on a network (a personal NAS), or the cloud (like Google Drive, Dropbox, or Amazon Drive). We will briefly look at each of them.

Internal storage is fast to access, cheap, and easy to use for backups. Its disadvantage is that it is not protected from theft, fire, or machine failure and is bound to the machine it is mounted on. In addition, it cannot be accessed via the internet (except with dedicated SW), and if it is also the HDD where your OS is installed, any Filesystem (FS) failure may lead to data loss. Thus, when using it for backups, it is recommended to use a separate HDD/SSD on a PC/laptop.

External storage is the cheapest form of secondary backup, not connected to your machine. While it is...
