Liferay Portal 6.x Enterprise Intranets (Update)

Chapter 2. Setting Up a Home Page and Navigation Structure for the Intranet

This chapter will assist administrators and normal users with implementing a portal page with portlets, in the Palm Tree Publications enterprise. It will guide you through setting up the portal, building pages, setting up portal pages, and customizing portlets. It will also address the topic of navigating the structure of intranet websites. In addition, it will provide guidance on configuring the portals, as well as bringing pages together in action. And finally, it will show us how to share portlets within a portal page and how to configure the Control Panel settings through the properties file. By the end of this chapter, you will have learned the following:

  • Using a portal page with portlets, basic knowledge about portlets, and how the portal works
  • Setting up the portal, building pages, and setting up portal pages
  • Customizing portlets
  • Navigating the structure of the intranet
  • Configuring the portal
  • Bringing...

Experiencing the portal

Liferay provides unique interface for the portal. It makes the portal unique by providing everything customizable. The Palm Tree Publications enterprise administrator, say "Palm Tree", will experience the portal locally. After starting up the portal by typing the http://localhost:8080 URL in a browser, you will able to see the Liferay Portal home page. Now, log in as "Palm Tree" Admin to see the portal page interface similar to the following screenshot. Generally speaking, a portal page is made up of a set of portlets—for example, Web Content Display, the navigation portlet, breadcrumb portlet, and the default pages.

Building the Palm Tree Publications site

Let's create a site for our example with the name Palm Tree, which will help us understand the portal concept clearly.

Follow these steps to create a new site:

  1. Click on the Admin link; a drop-down menu will appear (see Figure 2.3).
  2. Click on Control Panel and select Sites.
  3. Now, click on Add and select Blank Site.
  4. Fill in the site name and site description keeping all other settings default. We will be discussing this in detail in the coming chapters.
  5. Finally, click on the Save button. The Palm Tree site is created successfully and it will redirect to the site admin page.

The preceding screenshot shows the list of sites displayed by the Sites section in the Control Panel.

  6. Now create a page for the site. Click on the Pages link and select Site Pages from the drop-down menu on the left-hand side. Under Public page, add a new page with the name Home. See the detailed steps given in the following section.

Finally, you have created...

Setting up portal pages

As an administrator or a website editor, you are required to set up pages of any site. Let's say that you're expected to set up the public pages for the Palm Tree site with the following tasks.

Adding a child page

  1. Let us add a child page under the Books page. Select Admin | Site Administration | Pages under the dock bar menu.
  2. Click on Add Child Page button; an Add Child Page popup will appear to allow you to fill in the new child page name and page type.
  3. Enter the page name as Stories, keep the page type Empty Page. Click on Add page to complete the task.
  4. A child page Stories has been created under the Books page, as seen in the following screenshot.
  5. Finally, save the child page.

Note

Public pages: These are accessible to anyone, even to users who are not signed-in(guests). Pages can be restricted at any page level for different users through the permission system.

Private pages: These are accessible only to users who are members of the site that owns the pages...

Customizing portlets

As a Palm Tree administrator of the enterprise Palm Tree Publications, you may be needed to customize the portlet.

Liferay provides us with a feature to customize the portlet through options/controls like Look and Feel, Configuration, Export/Import, Maximize, Minimize, and Remove.

  • Look and Feel: This is used to change the portlet display by using the CSS and JavaScript. It even allows enabling and disabling the portlet border among many other settings.
    Customizing portlets

Figure 2.17: The popup interface for portal look and feel (CSS) setting

As you can see in the preceding screenshot, there are many links for settings like Portlet Configuration, Text Styles, Background Styles, Border Styles, Margin and Padding, and Advance Styling:

    • Portlet Configuration: In this, you can change the portlet title, define a custom title, link portlet URLs to different internal pages, and you can show the border of the portlet
    • Text Styles: This allows you to change the text style of the portlet
    • Background Styles...

Navigating the structure of an intranet site

Let's customize the Home page by placing the portlets and providing the following functions:

  • Show the structured directory of links to all the pages in the portal. You simply add the Site Map portlet (portlet ID 85) in a page if the portlet isn't there.
  • Display a directory of links by reflecting the page structure, which helps to drill down into the current page. You can add a Navigation portlet (portlet ID 71) in a page.
  • Display a trail of parent pages for the current page. You just add the Breadcrumb portlet (portlet ID 73) in a page.

The Breadcrumb portlet displays a trail of parent pages for the current page. It can be placed on public portal pages as a navigational aid for publishing websites. It helps the user visualize the structure of a website and quickly move from a page to a broader grouping of information. Note that the breadcrumb portlet is embedded within the Classic theme.

I find this book to be useful for creating intranet portals in enterprise environments. The book has lots of examples, tips, and notes that help the reader to understand portal development well. It does cover a wide range of topics and also new features in Liferay 6.2, so it is up to date. This book is perhaps more useful for administration aspects of Liferay since it covers advanced topics. Towards the end of the book, I found information on the upcoming Liferay 7 features to be useful and interesting.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
