Hands-On Full Stack Development with Spring Boot 2.0 and React

Using JPA to Create and Access a Database

This chapter covers how to use JPA with Spring Boot. We will create a database by using entity classes. In the first phase, we will be using the H2 in-memory database for development and demonstration purposes. H2 is an in-memory SQL database that is really good for fast development or demonstration purposes. In the second phase, we will move from H2 to use MariaDB. This chapter also describes the creation of CRUD repositories and a one-to-many connection between database tables.

In this chapter, we will look at the following:

  • Basics and benefits of using JPA
  • How to define a database by using entity classes
  • How to create Spring Boot backend with a database

Technical requirements

Basics of ORM, JPA, and Hibernate

Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) is a technique that allows you to fetch and manipulate from a database by using an object-oriented programming paradigm. ORM is really nice for programmers because it relies on object-oriented concepts, not on database structure. It also makes development much faster and reduces the amount of source code. ORM is mostly independent of the databases and developers don't have...

Summary

In this chapter, we used JPA to create our Spring Boot application database. First, we created entity classes, which are mapped to database tables. Then, we created CrudRepository for our entity class and that provides CRUD operations for the entity. After that, we managed to add some demo data to our database by using CommandLineRunner. We also created one-to-many relations between two entities. At the beginning of the chapter, we used the H2 in-memory database, while at the end, we switched the database to MariaDB. In the next chapter we will create RESTful web service to our backend.

Questions

  1. What are ORM, JPA, and Hibernate?
  2. How can you create an entity class?
  3. How can you create CrudRepository?
  4. How does the CrudRepository provide for your application?
  5. How can you create a one-to-many relationship between tables?
  6. How can you add demo data to a database with Spring Boot?
  7. How can you access the H2 console?
  8. How can you connect your Spring Boot application to MariaDB?

Key benefits

  • Develop resourceful backends using Spring Boot and faultless frontends using React.
  • Explore the techniques involved in creating a full-stack app by going through a methodical approach.
  • Learn to add CRUD functionalities and use Material UI in the user interface to make it more user-friendly.

Description

Apart from knowing how to write frontend and backend code, a full-stack engineer has to tackle all the problems that are encountered in the application development life cycle, starting from a simple idea to UI design, the technical design, and all the way to implementing, testing, production, deployment, and monitoring. This book covers the full set of technologies that you need to know to become a full-stack web developer with Spring Boot for the backend and React for the frontend. This comprehensive guide demonstrates how to build a modern full-stack application in practice. This book will teach you how to build RESTful API endpoints and work with the data access Layer of Spring, using Hibernate as the ORM. As we move ahead, you will be introduced to the other components of Spring, such as Spring Security, which will teach you how to secure the backend. Then, we will move on to the frontend, where you will be introduced to React, a modern JavaScript library for building fast and reliable user interfaces, and its app development environment and components. You will also create a Docker container for your application. Finally, the book will lay out the best practices that underpin professional full-stack web development.

Who is this book for?

Java developers who are familiar with Spring, but have not yet built full-stack applications

What you will learn

  • • Create a RESTful web service with Spring Boot
  • • Understand how to use React for frontend programming
  • • Gain knowledge of how to create unit tests using JUnit
  • • Discover the techniques that go into securing the backend using Spring Security
  • • Learn how to use Material UI in the user interface to make it more user-friendly
  • • Create a React app by using the Create React App starter kit made by Facebook

I have read many tutorial books, and many times the code within them is riddled with bugs or the text is not clear. The author of this book does not make such mistakes. I am almost 1/2 way done, and the examples are well done. If there is a problem, it is not hard to go back and retrace what the author is trying to tell you. A note: if you want to get more in depth on the full Spring Framework, you will need further reading, but this book is a good guide to quickly getting a Spring Boot project up and running.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
