Summary
It is time to close this lengthy chapter. We hope it has been useful for you to gain a better view of the different initiatives that can be used to optimize IaaS compute service offerings in the cloud.
During the chapter, we have reviewed initiatives for IaaS services such as rightsizing, vertical and horizontal scaling, and power scheduling to have a broad palette of tools to apply FinOps in cloud services. We have also described new purchase models such as Reserved Instances and Spot VMs, which are great yet complex offerings to manage, and may be new for cloud newcomers.
Also, having covered a lot of architectural concepts and best practices, we are confident that you have ended up with a higher-level view of how to design around cost optimization.
In the next chapter, we will continue our optimization journey by covering the remainder of compute optimization, which is how to optimize PaaS solutions, as well as other compute-related initiatives.
