Computer Vision on AWS

Computer Vision Applications and AWS AI/ML Services Overview

In the past decade, the field of computer vision (CV) has rapidly advanced. Research in deep learning (DL) techniques has helped computers mimic human brains to “see” content in videos and images and transform it into actionable insights. There are examples of the wide variety of applications of CV all around us, including self-driving cars, text and handwriting detection, classifying different types of skin cancer in images, industrial equipment inspection, and detecting faces and objects in videos. Despite recent advancements, the availability of vast amounts of data from disparate sources has posed challenges in creating scalable CV solutions that achieve high-quality results. Automating a production CV pipeline is a cumbersome task requiring many steps. You may be asking, “How do I get started?” and “What are the best practices?”.

If you are a machine learning (ML) engineer or data scientist or want to better understand how to build and implement comprehensive CV solutions on Amazon Web Services (AWS), this book is for you. We provide practical code examples, tips, and step-by-step explanations to help you quickly deploy and automate production CV models. We assume that you have intermediate-level knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) and ML concepts. In this first chapter, we will introduce CV and address implementation challenges, discuss the prevalence of CV across a variety of use cases, and learn about AWS AI/ML services.

In this chapter, we will cover the following:

  • Understanding CV
  • Solving business challenges with CV
  • Exploring AWS AI/ML services
  • Setting up your AWS environment

Technical requirements

You will need a computer with internet access to create an AWS account to set up Amazon SageMaker to run the code samples in the following chapters. The Python code and sample datasets for the solutions discussed are available at https://github.com/PacktPublishing/Computer-Vision-on-AWS.

Deep learning (DL) has taken the world by storm, revolutionizing entire fields such as computer vision and natural language processing. Beyond the unprecedented accuracy of DL-based computer vision models, computer vision in the deep learning era has been greatly facilitated by useful cloud APIs, such as those on AWS. While there are already many good books on various aspects of modern (DL-based) computer vision, this book is an excellent and rather unique resource for leveraging cloud APIs for solving real-world computer vision tasks quickly and effectively. The book begins with a clear and detailed overview of computer vision on AWS and Amazon Rekognition. It proceeds with detailed examples of real-world use cases and their related implementations using AWS services, such as real-time video analysis, content moderation, and detection of manufacturing defects. An overview of related Amazon SageMaker capabilities is also provided, with detailed examples of data annotation, training, and deployment of computer vision models. The last part of the book describes useful best practices and important design principles, such as for scaling, cost reduction, security and mitigating bias. The accompanying GitHub repository includes practical and detailed code examples, and is very helpful in reinforcing the materials and concepts presented in the book. This practical guide will benefit any data scientist or machine learning practitioner who wants to better understand how to efficiently build effective computer vision solutions on AWS. Some understanding of machine learning concepts, as well as familiarity with the Python programming language, will be helpful to fully benefit from this book.Highly recommended!

The book serves as an excellent resource for learning about AWS and its computer vision services. The book focuses more on utilizing AWS services, so basic knowledge of computer vision is required. I especially enjoyed part 4 of the book, where they detail the real-world application of computer vision. Overall, an excellent book for people into computer vision.

"Computer Vision on AWS" is a comprehensive guide to building computer vision solutions using AWS services. The book is authored by Lauren Mullennex, Mate Bachmeier, and Jay Rao, who are experienced data scientists and engineers with a deep understanding of computer vision and AWS.The book is divided into five parts: "Introduction to Computer Vision on AWS and Amazon Rekognition", "Applying CV to Real-world Use-Cases", "CV at the Edge", "Building CV Solutions with Amazon SageMaker" and last but not least "Best Practices for Production-ready CV Workloads". The first part provides an introduction to computer vision and AWS services and explores the use of the Rekognition service in AWS and its use cases. In contrast, the second part delves into the details of building computer vision applications on Real World scenarios. The third part covers advanced topics such as object detection, and face recognition. The fourth part covers Enhancing the power of Building CV applications using AWS SageMaker. And the last part gives us a comprehensive guide for the best practices to follow for production-ready workload for CV applications. The book is well-written and easy to follow, even for those with little or no prior experience in computer vision or AWS. The authors provide clear explanations of key concepts and offer practical examples that illustrate how to implement computer vision solutions using AWS services. The code samples provided in the book are also very helpful for readers who want to experiment with the concepts discussed in the book. One of the book's strengths is the authors' emphasis on best practices and how to avoid common pitfalls when building computer vision solutions on AWS. They also provide guidance on how to optimize performance and cost-effectiveness when working with AWS services.Overall, "Computer Vision on AWS" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn how to build computer vision solutions on AWS. The book is well-organized, and clearly written, and provides practical guidance and best practices for building computer vision applications using AWS services. I highly recommend this book to data scientists, engineers, and anyone interested in computer vision and AWS.

The authors did a great job in summarizing modern approaches to using AWS for computer vision. The setup instructions in addition to the code is important for beginners to digest - and as someone who uses AWS often for CV, I find this to be a great resource to quickly dive deep into areas I am not familiar with
