This book is a wealth of practical advice on how to build an influential Analytics and AI team within organizations. If your organization has begun to embrace the need for data driven analytics to stay competitive, this book is a must read! I have witnessed first hand, in my own 30 year career in IT, numerous times where analytics teams have failed to deliver on their promise. This book explains carefully, in simple prose, the many pitfalls that must be avoided before the Analytics Center of Excellent (COE) can become a successful and valued part of an organization.Every aspect of building an analytics team is covered in this book, from the type of leader that is needed; to the traits of successful team members; how to find, recruit and retain the best talent; how to choose projects that have the best chance of success; the importance of constant and continual engagement with the various stakeholders including the Executive Sponsors; the best place within an organization where such a team should report to have the best chance of success; how to prepare the functional areas within a company for the needed change that analytics teams might recommend; even how to deal with the changing nature of jobs and work within organizations.Analytics will change all our lives and is such an important topic. The book is well organized and is easy to read. Best of all, I love the way real-life examples are used throughout the book to illustrate important points. The author's many many years of experience shine through in every chapter and with every real-world example. From my own perspective, if I could have read this book 3 years ago, I might have saved a few analytics projects I was involved in that ended up going awry. The journey to success in analytics is not an easy one - I highly recommend you use this book as a guide to help you on your own journey.

John Thompson’s Building Analytics Teams is the must read book of 2020 for any leader aiming to leverage data and analytics for bigger business impact. John combines his decades of expertise in this space, research, anecdotes from real world customers, and humor to make this an approachable and actionable read.A few of my favorite nuggets of wisdom:Orignal sin - putting advance analytics and AI in the technology department (and why analytics is so very different from other information systems projects)“Organizational change is gated by the amount of change individuals can understand and assimilate.” ... the most successful AI and analytics programs combine people change management in the planning.Bias, ethics, teaching the next generation to love data and analytics and to think critically about data in context
