VMware vSphere 5.1 Cookbook

Chapter 2. Performing a Fresh Installation of vSphere 5.1

In this chapter we will cover the following:

  • Installing vCenter 5.1

  • Deploying a VMware vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA)

  • Preparing vCenter Server Appliance for first use

  • Installing the vCenter Server Appliance update

  • Upgrading the vCenter Server Appliance

  • Installing ESXi 5.1

  • Performing a scripted Install of the ESXi server

Introduction

Starting with vSphere 5.0, VMware doesn't offer the ESX classic version, but the ESXi hypervisor version. The classic version of the ESX server had a Linux-based Service Console. One of the most evident benefits of removing the Service Console is that ESX hypervisor version (ESXi) will have a smaller installation footprint. It can even be embedded on the server boards or USB drives. Because of the smaller footprint, the installation is faster. Historically, most of the security updates that VMware released were for the Service Console and not for the hypervisor component. Meaning, as we move ahead we will require less frequent patching to be done on the ESXi servers.

The vCenter Server is the component that provides centralized management of your vSphere environment. Most of the administrative tasks on a single ESXi server can be done by using the vSphere Windows Client software. As in most cases, however, when you have an environment that has multiple ESXi servers, managing...

Installing vCenter 5.1

This recipe will focus on the steps needed to perform a fresh/new installation of vCenter Server 5.1 on a Windows machine.

Getting ready

Let's take a look at the pre-install checks that need to be performed:

  1. Check the vCenter Server software requirements.

  2. Check the ESX server compatibility.

  3. Check the database compatibility.

  4. Back up the SSL certificates.

We won't be discussing these checks here since these were discussed in the Upgrading vCenter Server section in Chapter 1, Upgrading to vSphere 5.1.

You could download the vCenter Server installation bundle from the following download page:

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/info/slug/datacenter_cloud_infrastructure/vmware_vsphere/5_1

The download item would be listed as VMware vCenter Server 5.1 and modules. The download is available in both ISO and ZIP archives.

If you start the installation on a Windows machine that already has a previous version of vCenter Server installed, then the installation wizard will not provide you...

Deploying a VMware vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA)

The vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) can be either downloaded as a single package (OVA); or the OVF, system disk, and data disk can be downloaded separately.

At the time of writing this book, the following were the names of the appliance files:

VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5100-799730_OVF10.ova

Or

VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5100-799730_OVF10.ovf

VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5100-799730-system.vmdk

VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5100-799730-data.vmdk

These names could possibly change when VMware releases the next update. I have included the file names only to give you a sense of what files have to be downloaded.

Tip

Before you deploy the appliance, create a DNS entry for the hostname that is given to the appliance.

How to do it...

In this recipe we will learn how to deploy the vCSA appliance in your infrastructure:

  1. In order to deploy the appliance you would need to use the Deploy OVF Template wizard using vSphere...

Preparing vCenter Server Appliance for first use

Just deploying the appliance wouldn't just make it available for use. The appliance has to be prepared so that it can be made available on the network and can be used to manage ESXi servers.

Getting ready

Power on the appliance virtual machine. The first screen after the boot is shown in the following screenshot:

At this screen you could select Login to log in to the appliance.

Note

The default username and password for the appliance are root and vmware.

The Quickstart Guide section of the first screen will show you the URL that should be used to connect to the web interface of vCenter Server Appliance. This web interface is not used to manage the ESXi server, but to configure the vCenter Server Appliance. The How to do it... section of this recipe will help you configure and prepare the appliance for its first use.

How to do it...

In this recipe we will learn how to perform the initial configuration and prepare the appliance for first use:

  1. Connect...

Installing the vCenter Server Appliance update

Unlike the Windows version of vCenter, the vCSA will let you check for updates from within the appliance. This is different from upgrading the appliance. For upgrade instructions read the Upgrading a vCenter Server Appliance recipe.

In this recipe, I will show you how to install an available update.

This option is available under the Update tab, which has two subtabs, Status and Settings. The Status subtab will display the current appliance version. You can install any available updates to the appliance on this page.

How to do it...

The following procedure will guide you through the steps required to update the vCenter Server appliance:

  1. Log in to the vCenter Server Appliance's web page as root.

  2. Go to the Update tab.

  3. Under the Status subtab, click on the Check Updates button to check for an available update.

  4. If an update is available it will show the new appliance version under Available Updates. Click on Install Updates.

  5. At the Install Update dialog...

Upgrading a vCenter Server Appliance

The Upgrade tab is used when you have deployed a new version of the appliance and you want to migrate the settings to the new appliance. The upgrade is not in-place you will be deploying a new vCSA appliance and will migrate the settings from the old appliance to the newly deployed one.

How to do it...

The following procedure will guide you through the steps required to upgrade a vCenter Server Appliance:

  1. Deploy and power on the new appliance and accept the EULA at the web interface.

  2. Navigate to the Upgrade tab of the new appliance and under the Prepare subtab select the appliance role as Destination.

  3. Navigate to the Upgrade tab of the old appliance and under the Prepare subtab select the appliance role as Source.

  4. Navigate to the Establish Trust subtab on the new appliance and copy the local appliance key.

  5. Navigate to the Establish Trust subtab on the old appliance and paste the local key from the new appliance into the Remote Appliance Key field and click on...

Installing ESXi 5.1

ESXi 5.1 does not have a graphical installer. A new installation of ESXi 5.1 will now use a GUID Partition Table (GPT) instead of MBR, hence enabling the use of disks greater than 2 TB for installation.

Note

A new installation of ESXi 5.1 will create a 4 GB scratch partition and the remainder of the disk space will be formatted using VMFS.

Installation of ESXi 5.1 is pretty straightforward. It is recommended that you refer to the VMware Compatibility Guide web page to verify whether the server hardware is compatible with ESXi 5.1, available at the following link:

http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

For a complete list of hardware requirements, please refer to page 26 of the ESX Server Installation and Setup guide, available at the following link:

http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-pubs.html

You could download the ESXi 5.1 ISO from the following link:

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/info/slug/datacenter_cloud_infrastructure...

Performing a scripted install of the ESXi server

With the help of the Installing ESXi 5.1 recipe, you should now be familiar with the regular interactive installation of the ESXi server. Although the interactive installation is an easy task, it becomes a tedious one when you are deploying servers in a larger environment. This is where a scripted installation could come in handy.

The How to do it... section will guide you through the steps required to perform a scripted installation.

How to do it...

The following are the steps involved in a scripted-installation process:

  1. Boot the server with the ESXi installation CD in the CD/DVD ROM drive.

  2. At the ESXi installer's Loading ESXi installer screen, press Shift + O.

  3. On pressing Shift + O, you would see the default command the installer uses: runweasel.

  4. At this prompt, specify the location of the install script. I have used an FTP location. Local CD ROM, USB driver, HTTP/HTTPS, or NFS are other supported script locations.

The ks script will then locate...

This is a must have reference for any and all that deal with vSphere 5.1 on an ongoing basis. It provides quick access to the most direct procedures of tackling the tasks associated with an enterprise class virtual infrastructure. Additionally it covers the explanation of the latest solutions and direct guidance in implementation aspects of VMware's latest flagship product in an easy to read and follow format.I have been working with VMware's products for years (achieving my first VCP with the Virtual Infrastructure 3 product). Like anyone working with virtualization solutions it has always been necessary to not only keep current with the ever changing landscape of how to do something, but do so in the most proficient and technically accurate way given the current solution and circumstances in the environment.Save yourself the hours of scouring search engines, forums and vendor documentation that quickly adds up to hours of cross referencing multiple sources, and purchase this guide to have the solutions readily at your disposal.

I've been using VMware for a while but since it's not the only thing I do I am always looking for great practical information and how to's to help me out at my job. It starts out with updating Vsphere to 5.1; there about 50 pages on this subject and it's easy to understand. It's not for the more advanced users and some of the book was below me but it has some great tips in it that I think make it worth the money.
