Understanding NFT standard ERC-721
ERC-721 is an NFT standard on the Ethereum blockchain that defines a set of rules that a smart contract must follow to enable the creation and management of unique digital assets. ERC-721 tokens are unique, one-of-a-kind assets that cannot be exchanged with each other on a one-to-one basis, making them ideal for creating digital art, collectibles, and other unique assets.
Each ERC-721 token has a unique identifier called a token ID, which is stored on the blockchain and cannot be duplicated or altered. This allows for ownership and provenance of the asset to be tracked and verified on the blockchain.
Here are some examples of ERC-721 tokens:
- CryptoKitties, a popular blockchain-based game where each CryptoKitty is an ERC-721 token with a unique appearance and set of attributes
- NBA Top Shot, a blockchain-based platform where users can buy, sell, and trade unique moments from NBA games as ERC-721 tokens
