Ethics and ethical reasoning in testing

If you’ve been in testing long enough, you’ll probably face a moment where someone asks you a simple and obvious question in a group setting and the boss gives you the look. The look says, “You better think real carefully about how you answer that.”

Wait a minute.

The person who is asking is a director. Vice president. CIO. CEO, maybe. Are you telling me I’m supposed to lie to our internal executives? That can’t be right. We mean, it should not be right. If we are not supposed to lie to them, then what are we supposed to do?

In our experience, there are five broad approaches here:

  • Tell the truth: “The software currently has 75 show-stopper bugs. On average, we introduce one new show-stopper for every five we fix. Given our current rate of fixing twenty per week, we do not see how we could put this responsibly into customers’ hands until January.”
