Preface

Scoring to Picture in Logic Pro is a book I have wanted to write for a long time. As a professor of film scoring at Liberty University for the last seven years, I was always in search of a textbook or materials for my students to use in their studies. I found that there are a lot of film scoring books circulating in the market, but most of them are outdated because of all of the technological developments in the last 20 years. I wanted to make sure that the most crucial aspects of film music and using Logic Pro from a film composer’s perspective are covered.

I have always been passionate about writing music for film, and working on many projects in the Hollywood industry has given me valuable hands-on experience as a film composer. I’m excited to share my knowledge with all of you, in a compact format for quick learning and use. This book, from beginning to end, not only will give you a comprehensive understanding of synchronization and an overview of how film scoring works but it will also explore how to use Logic Pro in the context of film music.

There are four areas that will be covered:

• Methods of scoring to picture
• Synchronizing music to picture

In this book, you will learn how to “score to picture” in Logic Pro and begin to understand the basic components of video and Logic Pro and the process of synchronization to picture using Logic Pro. I will provide scenarios and real-world examples you can work through that will give you the experience needed to take on a professional film scoring project.

You will learn what film music is and why and how it’s used in film and multimedia, as well as the process of post-production and final film score delivery. You will understand the role of a film, TV, and multimedia composer. It will give you the ability to implement commonly used industry scenarios in real gig environments.

The content reflects current working practices and extensively covers the latest topical issues and some historical aspects when it comes to the synchronization of music to picture and dealing with timing.

After successfully completing and practicing the entire book content, you will be able to enter the professional market of scoring to picture with greater confidence.
