Show Only the Things You Need
It may surprise you that my life is not one big dashboard of metrics. I try to measure things as often as possible, especially the less obvious things. But it isn’t essential for my survival. What is essential in my day-to-day activities is the following statement:
An analytic without action is useless.
This is an important principle to consider. Much like the earlier chapter where “analysis paralysis” was discussed, it is very easy to fall into a trap where you have more metrics than you can react to. Whether you believe the theory that the brain can only handle 5-9 things at a given point in time or not, I can tell you from experience that showing more than you need will only create additional questions. Less is more in this case.
