LaTeX Beginner's Guide

Chapter 2: Formatting Text and Creating Macros

In the last chapter, we installed LaTeX and used the TeXworks editor, as well as Overleaf, to write our first document. Now, we will look at the structure of text and focus on the text details and its formatting.

In this chapter, we will talk about the following:

  • Working with logical formatting
  • Understanding how LaTeX reads our input
  • Modifying the text fonts
  • Creating our own commands
  • Using boxes to limit the width of paragraphs
  • Breaking lines and paragraphs
  • Turning off full justification
  • Displaying quotes

By working with examples and trying out new features, we shall learn some basic concepts of LaTeX. By the end of this chapter, you will be familiar with commands and environments. You will even be able to define your own commands.

Now that you've started working intensively, you may encounter error messages when there's a problem with the document code. In such a case, you can look to Chapter 13, Troubleshooting, for possible solutions.

The book was recommended to me by a friend with more LaTeX expertise than I have. It is an introductory book covering the essential topics that are most likely relevant for every beginner, independent of his/her LaTeX-related background. The book offers a lot of (free) online references for further reading, including help forums. I recommend the book to LaTeX beginners and more advanced users that did not have a systematic introduction so far.

This book is excellent for learning/using LaTeX. The information was very informative and the examples were easy to follow. This book was an easy read, very user friendly. There are links to all of the information you would need to accomplish your task. I have been using LaTeX for over 30 years, and I learned a few things that would make my projects better.

I was writing a big technical proposal for my job and decided to use LaTeX. Only problem was I didn't know LaTeX. After reading this book and struggling with my document for a while, I now feel confident coding LaTeX at an intermediate level. The author makes complicated parts of this ancient language seem downright obvious. Looking at my final report, I realize how useful it is for writing technical papers, even in the corporate world.

Stefan approached me on the LaTex Community about writing a review for this book. I have been on the LaTeX Community for over 10 years, where Stefan is one of the moderators. To say he knows LaTeX would be an understatement (to say the least). I have never met anyone with as much knowledge as he does when it comes to all things LaTeX. I was really excited to take a look at the book and see how I could improve my Tex Skills. What I love about the book is how easily it is organized and using the most up to date editors like Overleaf. From the most seasoned veteran to the absolute beginner, anyone, can learn TeX with this book. I especially thought the work with graphics was a big help. That is one area I have struggled with when trying to set up documents. With the help of this guide, I have noticed a big improvement with how I can insert graphics in to my document. As a high school math teacher, my worksheets and guided notes and tests are more professional and polished thats to this book. I reference this book weekly (and I have been using TeX for nearly 20 years). This book is a must have reference for anyone who wants to get better with LaTeX.
