Extending OpenStack

Massively Scaling Computing Power

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
–Albert Einstein

There is always a reason to enlarge your private OpenStack cloud environment—successful deployment. Preparing a layout design that's ready to grow on demand is quite challenging. For this reason, OpenStack has been designed to grow seamlessly. Procurement of additional resources as needed should be straightforward. That is where capacity planning management best practices come into play. It is essential to ensure that any request to the OpenStack resource pools should be served without limitation. On the other hand, from an infrastructure perspective, the available hardware that runs an OpenStack private cloud will always have capacity limits including computing, networking, and storage resources...

Decomposing the compute power

The compute service in Nova is considered to be the core component of OpenStack. Understanding how to scale out the workload among several identical compute nodes might require to briefly revisit the building blocks of Nova:

  • nova-compute: This runs on the compute node as described in Chapter 1, Inflating the OpenStack Setup. It is responsible for communicating with the hypervisors. Nova-compute interacts with each hypervisor by means of drivers. It creates compute resources by picking up requests from the message queue.
  • nova-scheduler: This runs on the cloud controller as described in Chapter 1, Inflating the OpenStack Setup. It is responsible for finding the right placement (physical server) of the initiated request to create a VM. The request will be left in the message queue along with additional information regarding the server information where...

Empowering the compute service

In this section, we will add a new compute host to our first initial OpenStack environment using Ansible. The new compute node will have similar hardware requirements to the first compute node, as follows:

  • Memory: At least 4 GB RAM
  • Processor: At least 4 64-bit x86 CPUs
  • Disk space: At least 40 GB free disk space
  • Network: At least two NICs

The following excerpt will be added to the vagrant file in our test environment:

    ...
    # Compute Node
    config.vm.define :cn02 do |cn02|
      cn02.vm.hostname= "cn02"
      cn02.vm.provider "virtualbox" do |vb|
              vb.customize ["modifyvm", :id, "--memory", "4096"]
              vb.customize ["modifyvm", :id, "--cpus", "4"]
                 vb.customize ["modifyvm", :id, "--nicpromic2", &quot...

Varying the compute flavor

One of the key successes of OpenStack is its exposure to other hypervisor vendors—no vendor lock-in. As virtualization platforms have continued to evolve over the last decade, cloud providers have faced a major challenge regarding how to unlock their opportunities to keep growing. OpenStack makes it possible to support and integrate more virtualization technologies at pace—more freedom of choice. Extending your private OpenStack cloud should not only be limited to bringing more power to the compute fleet, but also enabling flexibility across supported virtualization platforms. At the time of writing, OpenStack supports the following hypervisor technologies:

  • Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) (libvirt)
  • QEMU
  • LXC
  • XenServer
  • VMware
  • Docker
  • Hyper-V
An exhaustive list of the supported hypervisors in OpenStack can be found at http://docs.openstack...

Segregating the compute resources

What about letting your OpenStack cloud environment go beyond its limits? This can be the right moment to revisit the design of your private cloud when it grows in size. Most importantly, an operational team should be aware that the offered service should keep functioning continuously. To become more efficient as the user's resource base grows, one should pinpoint more specifically the worker blocks of the cloud—compute nodes. Again, OpenStack comes with great concepts that would help to massively scale your compute power. This is where the art of segregation comes. Segregation in OpenStack can be classified into two main umbrellas:

  • Infrastructure segregation: This involves logical grouping based on conceptual and physical capabilities. Typically, it defines a specific number of clusters organized to scale horizontally.
  • Workload segregation...

Summary

The OpenStack compute service leverages many concepts and terminologies described in this chapter in order to enable additional OpenStack capabilities. We have learned how adding a new compute node can be performed from code using Ansible. More advanced layouts have been exposed to take advantage of several supported hypervisors by OpenStack. We have covered a few of them, such as Docker and Xen. VMware and HyperV are also powerful candidates to support Nova hypervisors in OpenStack, but they were not covered. This chapter demonstrates not only that adopting a hybrid hypervisor setup might expand your OpenStack environment, but also that you might expand it adopting compute segregation. It is a big plus to design a compute cluster setup by taking into consideration how they should be grouped locally and spread widely. We have covered a logical grouping layout using host...

Additionally, you'll explore the power of big data as a Service terminology implemented in OpenStack by integrating the Sahara project. This book will teach you how to build Hadoop clusters and launch jobs in a very simple way. Then you'll automate and deploy applications on top of OpenStack. You will discover how to write your own plugin in the Murano project. The final part of the book will go through best practices for security such as identity, access management, and authentication exposed by Keystone in OpenStack. By the end of this book, you will be ready to extend and customize your private cloud based on your requirements.

This book is for users who have already gained some experience with OpenStack and would like to get more out of their installation. It starts out by walking you through setting up a test environment with VirtualBox and Vagrant. This environment is then used throughout the book to demonstrate each feature and implementation discussed. It gives you the opportunity to immediately try what you're reading. Later, when applying these principles to your production environment this will already give you a head start. The rest of the book is structured into independent chapters on topics like Computing, Storage or Networking, that can be read in any order. Or you might focus on only a handful of chapters that tackle concrete problems you're facing. In any case I've found this book very valuable in gaining in-depth insight that might be hard to get from internet resources alone. I personally would have prefered even more background information on some topics. Even so I can clearly say that my understanding of OpenStack and how to utilize its myriad of choice has grown by reading this book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.
