Gathering requirements
We need to recall together what we already discussed in Chapter 2, Aligning BI Solutions with Business Demands (business case description for the Universe in the book). We need to gather and analyze requirements before we start any BI implementation. The requirements need to be SMART to lead the project to success; otherwise, the business needs could be misunderstood and lead the project to fail. The term SMART is explained as follows:
Specific: Significant and simple
Measurable: Meaningful
Achievable: Appropriate and acceptable
Relevant: Realistic and reasonable
Time bound: Time framed and time limited
The requirements-gathering process is part of the initiation phase of any project, and this process needs to be completed before starting the following phases:
Planning: This will help give an accurate estimate about the required time and budget to complete the project.
