Introduction to Amazon EBS

Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) offers block-level storage volumes for EC2 instances. As raw block devices, EBS volumes can be mounted on EC2 instances. When connected, these volumes function as persistent storage, suitable for hosting operating systems, installing applications, and forming file systems.

Volume configurations connected to an instance can be adjusted dynamically. Applications requiring raw, unformatted, block-level storage, including file systems and databases, use EBS volumes as an optimal primary storage option. Furthermore, EBS volumes are designed for applications with high throughput, characterized by extended and continuous read and write operations, and for database-oriented applications that need random read and write access.
