Using a VPN
Today, we need to access resources in many ways—from homes, businesses, in airports, or while on vacation. Because of the many threats to our data in a complex world, many businesses and individuals use a VPN to securely transmit data.
Important note
The term VPN stems from the idea that the technology secures data that originates in a private protected network that must travel across an insecure public network.
The concept of a VPN started over three decades ago in the 1990s, when a Microsoft engineer developed the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), which was a precursor to today's VPNs. This functionality was included in Windows operating systems, and businesses soon began using the technology. After setting up a secure tunnel, clients were able to access network resources in the same way they would if they were sitting in the private network, but remotely using cryptographic tunneling protocols.
