Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager Cookbook

Chapter 2. Deploying System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager

In this chapter, we will cover:

  • Implementing SQL high availability
  • Scripting the deployment
  • Deploying gateway servers

Introduction

System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager (SCOM) has a fairly mature wizard-driven GUI installation available for use. Assuming you have decided on the architecture for your deployment, performing the installation should be fairly straightforward with the use of this wizard, and therefore, this chapter won't cover a standard installation.

This chapter, nevertheless, will delve deeper into areas such as how to implement high availability at the SQL layer before you deploy SCOM. It will also explore prerequisites needed before installation and how to script the automation of deployments that will allow you to scale your infrastructure easier at a later date.

Implementing SQL high availability

The following recipe will guide you through the steps required to set up SQL Server with high availability for use with System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager.

For this recipe, we will be implementing the SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature. You could also use the well-known method of Windows Failover Clustering (WFC) and SQL Server Failover Clustered Instance (FCI). These are well-understood methods with plenty of documentation, while AlwaysOn Availability Groups is still a relatively new method, but it is becoming the Microsoft preferred method of providing high availability.

Tip

Another benefit of SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn over traditional clustering is the fact that it doesn't require costly shared storage.

Getting ready

For this recipe, you will require the following:

  • Two virtual machines with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise pre-installed
  • A normal installation of SQL, not a SQL Server FCI installation
  • Ensure during the installation...

Scripting the deployment

This recipe will help you develop a series of scripts that can be used to deploy the main roles and features of System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager:

  • Management Servers
  • Data Warehouse
  • Reporting Server
  • Gateways

While deploying some of the base infrastructure is usually a one-time operation, having these scripts will enable you to adopt a more scalable approach to Operations Manager with the ability to easily scale out your deployment as your monitoring needs expand.

Getting ready

For this recipe, you will require some virtual machines on which to test the deployment of SCOM and a PowerShell editor, such as the PowerShell ISE that is supplied with Windows.

You will need to copy the SCOM installation files from the DVD or ISO image to a file share that you will have access to from the server and as the user that you will run the script as.

How to do it...

The following code requires either typing into a PowerShell code editor such as the ISE or try downloading it from the...

Deploying gateway servers

The following recipe will guide you through the steps required to deploy Gateway Management Servers for use with System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager.

Gateways are predominately used to provide communications between segments of networks that are not trusted or have bandwidth constraints.

Rather than employing clients with agents reporting directly across the network on mass to the main management servers, by implementing a gateway server, you provide a local point for the agents to report to that will then compress and forward the collected information back to the main management server. This allows for better control of network bandwidth usage and provides the ability to restrict communication to a single endpoint IP address and port while using certificates for authentication purposes, negating the need for cross-forest or domain trusts.

Getting ready

For this recipe, you will require the following:

  • Deployment of at least one SCOM management server with it being...

So I found that while the book is good at having a somewhat structured way of learning SCOM, there are things in the book that are not correct, kind of correct, and some things are accurate. When real life tasks have been needed and I referred to the book, on some items, like installing gateway servers, it is not all complete and I ended up having to look on Youtube or elsewhere to find answers or reasons why following the book doesn't work. This is annoying. Another example is changing how manual agent installs are handled, the book says to navigate to Administration > Security when in fact it is Administration > Security > Settings > Properties. I mean if you're going to give clues this close you might as well go all the way. But then again who is going to sit down and write such a book with such detail? Welcome to the world of IT. So the book IMO is a good reference material but don't depend on it 100%.
