What this book covers

Chapter 1, Installation – Best Practices and Optimizations, covers the upgrade and installation for Veeam Backup & Replication v12. You will learn how to set up things such as the backup server, proxies, repositories, and more. There will be a reference to the Veeam Best Practices site as well. Once installation and upgrade are covered, we will dive further into adding things such as repository servers, proxy servers, and more.

Chapter 2, Core Architecture Enhancements, covers many of the new core enhancements in the Veeam Backup & Replication v12 software. You will learn about the new database option to replace SQL Server: PostgreSQL. We will also look at the new per-VM backup chains, which will make management simpler and easier for troubleshooting. Finally, we will look at some new Linux features, such as a specific selection option for hardened repository and using Linux as a proxy.

Chapter 3, Scale-Out Backup Repository – What’s New, covers the scale-out backup repository (SOBR) and what Veeam has added to make management easier. You can go directly to object storage now as well as have multiple buckets per SOBR tier. We will also look at VeeaMover, a new technology that allows you to move backups within a SOBR extent to another extent or even a new SOBR. We will also look at VeeaMover to move VMs between jobs, and jobs between repositories. Lastly, we will look at the new Rebalance option for the SOBR, which helps manage capacity between the extents as well as exporting from a SOBR in the Capacity or Archive tiers.

Chapter 4, Tape Server and Other Enhancements, covers the tape server and other enhancements within Veeam Backup & Replication v12. You will be shown how you can now have the tape server role on Linux as well as how sending from object storage to tape is now an option. We will look at NAS backup to tape, as well as better LTO9 support. Lastly, we will take a look at other changes such as restoring “Permissions Only” for files, exporting VM disks to another Hypervisor, and VM exclusions, which now include excluding them from jobs.

Chapter 5, Veeam’s New Enhanced Security Features, discusses all things security-related within Veeam Backup & Replication v12. We will first look at the new MFA option within the console and support for gMSA security groups. We next look at how there will no longer be a need for SSH or SUDO within a Linux server. Lastly, we will take a look at the Auto Logoff feature within the console, allowing backup administrators to keep resources low.

Chapter 6, Object Storage – What’s New and Enhancements, discusses what is new within object storage as well as enhancements within Veeam Backup & Replication v12. We will first look at the Direct to Object option, which everyone has been waiting for, including adding object storage to the Performance tier of a SOBR. We next look at how immutability can be turned on for GFS backups. Lastly, we will take a look at how third-party integrations have changed for things such as Azure Cool tier and Blob immutability, along with the new Wasabi integration wizard.

Chapter 7, What’s New in NAS Backup, discusses what is new within NAS backup for Veeam Backup & Replication v12. We will first look at the new Archive Copy Mode and NAS backup to object storage as a target. We next look at how NAS backup supports immutability now. We will take a look at how you can publish an NFS as an SMB share for restore. Lastly, we will take a look at the improved health check and Cloud Helper appliance.

Chapter 8, CDP and Veeam Cloud Connect, discusses enhancements to CDP and Veeam Cloud Connect within Veeam Backup & Replication v12. We will first look at how customers can use CDP for vCD (Cloud Director) within a Cloud Connect environment. We next look at how you can use CDP to go from vCD to vCD. Lastly, we will take a look at how service providers can do an instant VM recovery within the Veeam Cloud Connect console using the backups on the repository servers.
