Mastering Magento 2

Chapter 2. Installing Magento 2

Now that you've got your plan in hand from Chapter 1, Planning for Magento, it's time to now take the leap and install Magento 2 Community. While some hosting providers will install Magento for you, or provide installation assistance, Magento makes installation fairly easy. There are a few points to pay attention to, but if you follow the steps in this chapter, you'll be up and running with Magento in quick order.

In this chapter, we will learn about the following topics:

  • Installation strategies to improve Magento performance
  • How to configure multiple websites and stores
  • Strategies for backups and security

How hosting effects installation

If you own and operate your own servers, and your server meets the requirements for installing Magento, you're all set to go. However, for most people installing Magento Community, the quest to install Magento on an appropriate hosted server is vital to insuring that their Magento stores run quickly and securely.

Understanding types of hosting

Hosting plans range from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars per month, depending mainly on the type of server configuration you have. For most hosting providers, hosting is divided into three distinct categories:

  • For small beginner Magento stores, a shared server is a great way to start. In essence, you are sharing the server with other hosting clients. However, expect to outgrow this if your store begins to handle more than about 5,000 visitors each day.
  • Another option is a virtual machine (VM), commonly referred to as a cloud server. With a VM, the operating system is entirely abstracted from the underlying hardware...

Keys to a successful installation

Magento has made the installation process a reasonably easy-to-follow affair. Since you've probably completed at least one installation before (and who hasn't tried Magento out-of-the-box?), you're familiar with the process.

However, you can make the installation more successful just by adhering to the following battle-tested advice.

Tip

If you have never installed Magento before, it is not all that difficult. For assistance, there are a number of great resources, including the Packt book, Magento 2: Beginner's Guide. The Magento website also has an installation wiki (http://devdocs.Magento.com/guides/v2.0/install-gde/bk-install-guide.html).

Avoid the bleeding edge

If your Magento installation is to go live in short order, you should always avoid installing the latest, greatest version of Magento (or any other platform, for that matter). As a best practice, we never use any version where the third version number ends in zero, such as version...

Setting up Magento stores

As we discussed in Chapter 1, Planning for Magento, Magento leads the open source community in its ability to manage multiple websites and stores within a single installation. This is an often overlooked power of Magento. It is also one of the more complex configuration issues.

To help illustrate how to configure multiple stores in Magento, let's set up an example. As shown in the following table, we are going to build two online businesses, each with their own categories and products, and one with three Store Views. The following table shows the GWS relationship of this example:

If these are your planned stores, your next decision is how to set up your websites. As we discussed in Chapter 1...

Strategies for backups and security

If you're a seasoned developer or webmaster, you certainly have protocols in place for protecting your work, from daily backups to fail over servers. If you're a designer or site administrator, your back-ups are managed by your hosting provider or system administrator; you probably don't think much about back-ups on a daily basis.

However, with any complex configuration, a failure or mistake can still lead to hours and hours of lost time. Daily system backups are only good for what was done up to the time the backup was made. If you've worked with us in these first two chapters, you've already made a significant number of changes and configurations that, if you had to go back to yesterday's system backup, could take you hours to re-create.

We like to have backups, backups, and more backups, all along the way. Without interfering with how your systems are backed up, allow us to suggest some hard-learned strategies for working...

Summary

Boy, we covered a lot in this chapter! Yet despite all the screen captures and instructions, you most likely found the configuration processes not as daunting as first imagined. The sophistication of Magento requires a certain degree of complexity.

In this chapter, we implemented our planned multi-store configuration, learned how to configure our stores for multiple languages and currencies, and covered some basic practices for insuring our work against loss.

Next, we begin the process of creating our category and product infrastructure. After all, the reason we're here is to sell products!

Four years ago, when I first read the previous edition of this book, I tought: "Wow, this is the book I'd love to have written". Well, on this second edition, at least I can say: "I was honored about being invited to review the second edition and after that I love even more this book".That said, I can state that Bret Williams and Jonathan Bownds have done an amazing job when updating and expanding this "Mastering Magento" book, including the new version of this powerful ecommerce platform. This is not a book for beginners as its title says. But if you have the basic knowledge about Magento, this is the book you must have on your shelf or e-reader. It contains a series of "how I didn't think about that before" moments, explaining how to get your store into the next level and to get more and more from Magento. The most important, you have a step by step, with the major parts of the process of launching and running an online store with Magento 2.

This book like a woman's skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest :)) perfect for readers who are eager to comprehend the essence of complicated Magento system. Many thanks to the writers and to Amazon for this excellent publication.

To my knowledge this is the one and only book about Magento 2 that isn't written for developers. It deals with setting up a store from the administrator side and covers most of (if not all) the features of Magento 2.This book is complete and clear at a time. It helps me taking the right decisions for my e-commerce business. In the past I had many Internet pages, forums, etc. Now I have this book!

For anyone building a new website on Magento 2, this is a required reading. It gives you a good overall framework to build on further knowledge. If you are an advanced Magento programmer this may not be for you as I think its written for beginners. Cheers!

If you are planning to build your own store, It provides the complete idea regarding how to find a hosting provider, set up products, setup taxes, set up multistore etc. It focuses mostly on the backend configurations and setups. But if you are a Magento2 developer this book will not be very useful to you.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
