Glancing at the Waterfall model
As has been said, the Waterfall model is a structured development model based on a sequence of different phases. This means that each phase begins when the previous one has ended.
The Waterfall model probably stems from the application of project management practices coming from other kinds of projects, such as constructing buildings or manufacturing objects. Indeed, while I am no expert on them, it's easy to understand that in order to build a house, you have to precisely follow a sequence of steps, such as calculating the materials and weights, building foundations, and constructing walls.
The Waterfall model originated from a number of different articles and lectures (with the most important coming from Winston Royce) and has also been ratified in an official document by the US Department of Defense.
