More often than not, organizations see the value in setting up a PMO, especially if the organization offers a variety of products or services. The PMO's role is to specifically manage all projects and programs from a top-tier level with concern for the organization in mind. The value of a PMO to the project manager and the project team depends on how it is structured.
There are three categories of PMOs and each category provides progressively more support and more influence on your projects:
- Supportive
- Controlling
- Directive
You will not be asked to define the types of PMOs on the Project + exam, but it is good information for the real world.
