Salesforce Data Architecture and Management

Chapter 1:Data Architect Roles and Responsibilities

In this chapter, we will first define the term architecture in order to establish a baseline understanding of what the term means. This will help us to establish what it is, bring other stakeholders on the same page, and prevent scope creep in roles and responsibilities. We will then look at the types of architects, their roles, and why it's important for them to work together in order to both produce a cohesive architectural strategy and to deliver value to an enterprise. Often, people may mention needing a solution architect, but in reality, the work they need to do may be more suitable for a data architect because the skill set required is different. So, understanding the different types of architects is important.

In this chapter, we will also look at the responsibilities of a data architect and the soft and hard skills needed to be successful in the role. Covering these topics will help you to communicate with architects more effectively in order to engage the right resources for your project. Understanding this from the beginning will help you to see the overlap that sometimes exists between the skills that data architects and solution architects have and understand when a task may require the skills of one role more than the other.

We will conclude the chapter by discussing a typical day in the life of a data architect, which will allow us to understand the work they do and the potential challenges they face.

In particular, we will cover these topics:

  • Defining architecture
  • Exploring architecture roles
  • Why is data architecture important?
  • Data architect responsibilities
  • Data architect skills
  • A day in the life of a data architect

Description

As Salesforce orgs mature over time, data management and integrations are becoming more challenging than ever. The book focuses on data modeling concepts, how to apply them in Salesforce, and how they relate to objects and fields in Salesforce. You’ll learn the intricacies of managing data in Salesforce, starting from understanding why Salesforce has chosen to optimize for read rather than write operations. After developing a solid foundation, you’ll explore examples and best practices for managing your data. You’ll understand how to manage your master data and discover what the Golden Record is and why it is important for organizations. Next, you'll learn how to align your MDM and CRM strategy with a discussion on Salesforce’s Customer 360 and its key components. You’ll also cover data governance, its multiple facets, and how GDPR compliance can be achieved with Salesforce. Finally, you'll discover Large Data Volumes (LDVs) and best practices for migrating data using APIs. By the end of this book, you’ll be well-versed with data management, data backup, storage, and archiving in Salesforce.

This book is an interesting and readable guide to data architecture and management. It is suitable for anyone with experience in the Salesforce ecosystem, especially those who work with large orgs or those interested in how and why Salesforce works the way it does.Every chapter is well-organized and absolutely packed with good information. The real-world examples and tips on how to approach problems -- such as performance issues -- are very useful. I know I will be referring to this book frequently.I highly recommend this book, particularly for people studying for the Data Architecture and Management Designer certification. This review is based on the print version, which I received from the publisher in exchange for a review.

I was provided a copy of this book for review by the publisher and I am so happy it is on my shelf. This book is a fantastic guide for anyone in the Salesforce ecosystem whether you are a developer, admin or choose to go the architect route. If you work on the platform this book is for you. The book very clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of a data architect but more importantly goes into a detailed explanation of Master data management, data governance and performance that most may not encounter or even consider during their Salesforce careers. Having this knowledge lays the foundation for you to fully understand the platform and it's capabilities/limitations, which will in turn make you a better admin/dev/ architect.

As a Salesforce Architect, I am making decisions about data on a daily basis. Where does data live, move, and how should it be formatted, translated and presented to the users? This book is a very good look at all sorts of topics around data management and governance. For example, I was happy to see the way the author approached difficult issues such as LDV by explaining large data volumes in Salesforce and ways to approach and manage difficult scenarios.I look forward to using this book in the future to help with data integration and performance strategies.

If you thought that Data Architecture on the Salesforce platform was just about SOQL queries, then this is the book for you. Not only does the book cover the technical aspects of the discipline of Data Architecture, such as SOQL queries, LDV (Large Data Volumes), and more, but also about what careers in this area might look like.It is a very comprehensive look at everything related to the role of Data Architect, and specifically around the Salesforce platform. It is written in a way that makes it easy to understand and can be used as both a general information guide, as well as a reference book on the many topic areas surrounding data on the Salesforce platform. For Architects, the review of techniques for data modeling were great, as well as the chapter on Master Data Management. and if you are a developer, there are some interesting “Do’s and Don’ts” on implementing a DML strategy. If you are an internal Admin, or a Consultant, the sections on Data Governance regulations are invaluable, and the recommendations on Data Backup are a “must-read”.So, whether you are interested in a career as a Data Architect, a Salesforce Architect, Developer, Consultant or Administrator, this is the book for you.Lastly, I would highly recommend it if you are considering sitting for the Data Architecture and Management Designer and/or the CTA exam, this is a must-have for your set of research, review, and reference material library.
