Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) is a standard that specifies the formatting of sounds and images that are commonly used in image handling devices such as scanners and digital cameras. Put simply, EXIF is the metadata embedded into photo files taken by a digital camera and includes camera data such as the geo-location, time and date, manufacturer, resolution, and so on. Images with EXIF data can be leveraged by ethical hackers for reconnaissance and social engineering.
As an ethical hacker, you can collect publicly available images of your target and analyze them for EXIF data. The collected EXIF data may reveal the target’s geo-location, the type of device used for capturing the photo, and the time the picture was taken.
