Key benefits

  • Learn the core components of the two Python modules for ArcGIS: ArcPy and ArcGIS API for Python
  • Use ArcPy, pandas, NumPy, and ArcGIS in ArcGIS Pro Notebooks to manage and analyze geospatial data at scale
  • Integrate with ArcGIS Online using Python to publish and manage data

Description

Integrating Python into your day-to-day ArcGIS work is highly recommended when dealing with large amounts of geospatial data. Python for ArcGIS Pro aims to help you get your work done faster, with greater repeatability and higher confidence in your results. Starting from programming basics and building in complexity, two experienced ArcGIS professionals-turned-Python programmers teach you how to incorporate scripting at each step: automating the production of maps for print, managing data between ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, creating custom script tools for sharing, and then running data analysis and visualization on top of the ArcGIS geospatial library, all using Python. You’ll use ArcGIS Pro Notebooks to explore and analyze geospatial data, and write data engineering scripts to manage ongoing data processing and data transfers. This exercise-based book also includes three rich real-world case studies, giving you an opportunity to apply and extend the concepts you studied earlier. Irrespective of your expertise level with Esri software or the Python language, you’ll benefit from this book’s hands-on approach, which takes you through the major uses of Python for ArcGIS Pro to boost your ArcGIS productivity.

Who is this book for?

This book is ideal for anyone looking to add Python to their ArcGIS Pro workflows, even if you have no prior experience with programming. This includes ArcGIS professionals, intermediate ArcGIS Pro users, ArcGIS Pro power users, students, and people who want to move from being a GIS Technician to GIS Analyst; GIS Analyst to GIS Programmer; or GIS Developer/Programmer to a GIS Architect. Basic familiarity with geospatial/GIS syntax, ArcGIS, and data science (pandas) is helpful, though not necessary.

What you will learn

  • Automate map production to make and edit maps at scale, cutting down on repetitive tasks
  • Publish map layer data to ArcGIS Online
  • Automate data updates using the ArcPy Data Access module and cursors
  • Turn your scripts into script tools for ArcGIS Pro
  • Learn how to manage data on ArcGIS Online
  • Query, edit, and append to feature layers and create symbology with renderers and colorizers
  • Apply pandas and NumPy to raster and vector analysis
  • Learn new tricks to manage data for entire cities or large companies

This book does an excellent job of introducing beginner-level concepts to work with Python and geospatial data analysis. The focus is on Esri ArcGIS but the concepts can be transferred to pure python as well. You learn Pandas, Numpy, and of course ArcPy.The topics are covered extremely thoroughly including relevant history. If you're looking to automate you're ArcGIS workflows, this is the book for you.

It is a great guide for every GIS Analyst as it will support them in practicing python while using ArcGIS pro and take their skills to a next level. The book is suitable for beginners to experienced users as it takes you through the basics of python installation continues to the fundamentals of programming and then focusing ArcPY scripting module.I enjoyed the chapter focusing on ArcGIS Pro Notebooks as it is a very easy way to write, test, and share code with colleagues. Additionally, the chapter on automated map production is something that will help personally use to automate workflows when the number of maps is extremely high. Furthermore, the book explores the use of Pandas, raster analysis with Python, and geoprocessing with NumPy which are very significant processes to explore further. Finally, the last chapters are dedicated to several cases studies to support the learning processThe book has excellent structure, and it is very easy to understand and use daily for your analysis and expand your knowledge, I highly recommend it

I'm a GIS technician for ESRI and though I have not had a chance to read the book in its entirely, the amount I have been able to get through does have me intrigued, and it does look like it would be very useful. I plan on going back to school to further my education in programming in GIS and this book would be of great use for that.

As a geospatial analyst, I highly recommend this book for beginners and even advance python coders when it comes to using python for ArcGIS Pro. The book provides valuable information regarding automating the geoprocessing tasks in a systematic way. I also recommend for instructors who teach python for ArcGIS in colleges. This is the perfect book to recommend your students interested in learning python coding for Arc GIS as well as if you plan to make GIS as a career. I recommend this book wholeheartedly. There are lots of sample code well explained for both basic and experienced ArcGIS users.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
