Chapter 2. Present Yourself with a Prezumé

Prezi is a great way to create an affective online curriculum vitae to present yourself. In this project, you will learn how you can do that and sell yourself in a more creative way.

The logic is this: résumé + Prezi = prezumé!

Mission briefing

You need a job. How do you present yourself? The same as everyone else, with a boring cover letter that is just a list of facts? Or, do you want to give it a personal touch? Do you want to show a bit more of you? Prezi gives you the opportunity to tell a story—your story.

In this project, we will create a prezumé from start to finish. Our first task is to define our goal, the job we're applying for, and the message we want to tell. Then, the second task will be to gather all the information we might need. Maybe you won't use all the information in our prezumé, but it's better to skip a few things than get short on information. After that, as the third step, we will need to create a clear structure and choose what we want to use in our prezumé. Our fourth task will be to get creative and start thinking of a nice drawing, picture, metaphor, or other creative concepts to use. Then, we have to create our prezumé in Prezi. Finally, we have to share your prezumé to let the world...

What's your goal?

Before you start creating your prezumé, you should know what job you are applying for, what message you want to tell with your prezumé, and what the goal of your prezumé is.

Prepare for lift off

If you already know what kind of job you're looking for, you can skip this part. If you have no idea, you should first make up your mind and think about this. So, take a break, close your eyes, and visualize what kind of job you would love to have. Here are a few things you can think about:

  • Do you want to work for a small company or a multinational company?

  • How many hours do you want to work?

  • What do you want to do during your working day?

  • Do you want to manage or do work?

  • How far are you prepared to travel?

  • What is your passion and what makes you happy?

Engage thrusters

When you know what job you're looking for, let's put it on paper. Follow the steps listed here:

  1. Grab a piece of paper, draw two lines on the paper to divide it into three parts, and write the words "JOB", "MESSAGE", and "GOAL...

Gathering all the information

Now that we know what we are aiming for, it's time to gather all the information we need to create our prezumé.

Prepare for lift off

You might already have an extensive LinkedIn profile. That's fantastic, because then you are half way there. If you already have a written résumé, dig it up and use that as a basis. If you have nothing yet, just move on.

Engage thrusters

Usually a résumé is a complete overview of your career so far, including your personal information, special interests, and other things that are relevant to share with your future employer.

Writing your résumé

Before you choose what to put in your prezumé and what to leave out, it's best to collect all the information. If you change your goal in the future, you can still use that document as a basis because it's complete. It might take some time to write down everything, but it's worthwhile and if you keep it up to date, it will be useful for the rest of your life.

Structuring and choosing content

In this task, we will structure the content we have gathered and choose what we really need for our prezumé. This prezumé aims for a specific job; if you want to change jobs in the future, you need to make another prezume.

Prepare for lift off

Make sure you have the paper where you wrote your job, message, and goal; your written and printed résumé; and a highlighter ready.

Engage thrusters

Take a new look at the paper where you wrote your job, message, and goal, grab the highlighter, and mark in your résumé what's really important to include in your prezumé for this specific job application. You don't want to include everything, because then your prezumé would probably become too large. Your prezumé should be short and engaging enough to attract companies to contact you.

Getting creative!

Prezi is a creative tool. Use this to become creative yourself and design a beautiful prezumé in Prezi. In this task, we'll inspire you to design your prezumé and we'll give you lots of examples.

Engage thrusters

Before you start thinking about the design of your own prezumé, you should first watch other prezumés and get inspired. Here are three nice examples, you'll also find them online on www.prezihotshot.com. You will find other examples in the Explore section on Prezi.com. Just search for prezume and you'll find thousands of prezumés.

The second example is the story of Mandi Lindner told in a very nice way! It's build up with the subjects iLearn, iAdapt, and iGrow via iProduce and iWill, and ends with iCan in the overview, as shown in the following screenshot:

Creating your prezumé from start to finish

Finally, we are ready to create our prezumé in Prezi. This is the most fun part!

Prepare for lift off

For our prezi, we'll use the Scrapbook template of Prezi.com. You'll find the link to this template at www.prezihotshot.com. You'll also need the paper where you wrote your job, message, and goal, as well asyour résumé with the most important parts highlighted and your visual material.

Engage thrusters

The following steps should be performed to create your prezumé in Prezi:

  1. Make a copy of the Scrapbook prezi and click on Edit to open the prezi, as shown in the following screenshot:

    Let's get rid of the things we don't need.

  2. Click on the Edit Path button and choose Clear All to remove the existing path. We'll create our own path later.

  3. Then, remove the things that are already in and around the scrapbook, such as the scissors, the flowers, the buttons, and the photo frames. We'll leave one photo frame in the scrapbook for our photograph, as shown in the following...

Sharing your prezumé

When your prezumé is finished, you are not finished. Your prezumé will not reach your perfect job automatically. You'll have to share it first.

Prepare for lift off

Before you can share your prezi, you have to make it public. Maybe it's already public, but you better check this. If you have a free Public account your prezi will automatically be public and reusable by default. If you have a paid account or an educational Enjoy account, your prezis will be private by default.

If you do not want to make your prezi public, but you still want to share it, you'll also have plenty of options. Just keep reading.

You check whether your prezi is public. Go to prezi.com, click on the Your prezis tab, find your prezume and click on it. At the bottom-right corner, just under your prezi, you'll find the privacy status (Public & reusable, Public, Hidden, or Private). Click on the status if you want to change it. Mission accomplished

Prezi is great for job hunting. If you create a prezumé, you are one step ahead of other job seekers. Creative people especially benefit from using Prezi because it helps them to show their capabilities.

In this project, we just started building a prezi. We started off by answering three most important questions:

  • What job are you looking for?

  • What message do you want to tell?

  • What's your goal?

Then, we started gathering all the information by writing our résumé and collecting the visual material. Because we don't need all the information in our prezumé, we marked the most important stuff.

The next step was getting creative, but luckily you didn't have to invent everything. We can use predefined templates for your prezumé, and we did just that.

The last step was sharing your prezi with the world or with a specific HT manager or job hunter. Good luck with your new job!

A Hotshot challenge

For this project, you used a predefined template. Now, go ahead and create your own unique prezumé. Use one of the following ideas:

  • Use a timeline to list your education, job experience, and skills in a chronological order.

  • Use one word to put all the information in. The word could be the job title, your name, or the name of the company.

  • Use a really cool image that expresses your passion.

I purchased Ms. Groenendaal's previous book, "The Ultimate Prezi Guide" for my presentations in my undergrad criminology courses and it did wonders with impressing my audience and most of all, it impressed my professors. While preparing for my first criminal justice conference I discovered that she had recently published "Prezi HOTSHOT", which I immediately purchased and used it to guide me in my presentation. As a result, this book has assisted me in achieving my future goals with publishing and public speaking. Thank you!

The tone (spirit) of this book differs markedly from that of other technical books I commonly get. The author uses a very informal means of introducing the topic. Which is appropriate because Prezi is a very distinctive way of visually presenting material, where the latter can be text or graphics. In general, as you can see from the book, the material will have many instances of both.Prezi is shown as an infinite canvas. But you are advised to start by just focusing on 3 top level tasks - define the goal, message and audience. In itself, without recourse to using any computer package, thinking this way can be a great help when you start out and want to write down a talk that you will later give. Of course, this is not new to Prezi. Similar advice was available decades ago, when you might have had to do all this by hand, having no computer in sight.In a way, this is the power of Prezi. It takes you back to essentials. The computer is just a secondary tool. But using Prezi arrays the top level ideas and the lower level topics into a spatial arrangement on the canvas that is quick to grasp.A key aspect of Prezi is what they call frames. Where you can group the topics on the canvas into clusters. And then move these around, treating all the topics enclosed in a frame as one entity. This is a natural top down decomposition. Then when enough frames have been defined, you can make a path through these frames. The path is the presentation order.Scattered throughout the narrative are good pieces of advice for presentations. Like 'avoid large blocks of text'. Use images if possible, to engage the audience. And if you use drawings, keep them simple.

The book is well structured and allows the beginning prezi user to understand how a prezi can be built up in a few different ways. The language and structure used may come across as childish to native speakers, but help people to understand the content more effectively and may make it useful in a classroom setting. The book discusses how a prezi can be used to present a brainstorm, resumé, educational content and business presentations. After that it dives deep into how the layout can be designed, illustrations can be produced and animated.Unfortunately all these high-level explanations focus on the use of Adobe Illustrator. If you have that program, or are willing to pay for it - this book will help you very well with making good use of it for your prezi. If not, these sections will be mostly lost to you. Copyright, free software alternatives and free images are poorly discussed.All in all I found the first half of the book very helpful to arrange my thoughts effectively for making my next prezi, more than enough to make up for the last chapters.(full disclosure: I received a free copy of the book to be able to review; I did not receive compensation)

How do I buy and download an eBook? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Where there is an eBook version of a title available, you can buy it from the book details for that title. Add either the standalone eBook or the eBook and print book bundle to your shopping cart. Your eBook will show in your cart as a product on its own. After completing checkout and payment in the normal way, you will receive your receipt on the screen containing a link to a personalised PDF download file. This link will remain active for 30 days. You can download backup copies of the file by logging in to your account at any time.

If you already have Adobe reader installed, then clicking on the link will download and open the PDF file directly. If you don't, then save the PDF file on your machine and download the Reader to view it.

Packt eBook and Licensing When you buy an eBook from Packt Publishing, completing your purchase means you accept the terms of our licence agreement. Please read the full text of the agreement. In it we have tried to balance the need for the ebook to be usable for you the reader with our needs to protect the rights of us as Publishers and of our authors. In summary, the agreement says:

Our eBooks are currently available in a variety of formats such as PDF and ePubs. In the future, this may well change with trends and development in technology, but please note that our PDFs are not Adobe eBook Reader format, which has greater restrictions on security.
