Office 365 Essentials

Fundamentals of Office 365

In this chapter, we will cover the fundamentals of Microsoft Office 365, based on the experience and best practices gathered from previous implementations. We will go through the following topics:

  • Planning Office 365
  • Evaluating Office 365
  • Deployment Office 365
  • Descriptions Office 365
  • Analysis Office 365

With this knowledge, you will have a better understanding of how to implement Office 365 in your organization.

There are business challenges in all implementations of Office 365. The following are some statements from organizations that have gone through the process:

Planning Office 365

Office 365 is a platform that was created to bring Office to the cloud and make it available not only for large enterprises, but also for small organizations.

All organizations, regardless of size, need careful preparation, even for small migrations. Organizations that have on-premises solutions need to be integrated with Office 365, and may require additional preparation, depending on each workload (as is the case with Exchange, for instance). The requirements and objectives for each type of migration can vary depending on the complexity of the environment, the on-premises version, and other factors.

The planning phase is critical to using the base technologies to leverage and implement Office 365. Office 365 includes several cloud-optimized productivity services, such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Yammer, Skype for Business, and Microsoft Teams hosted...

Evaluating Office 365

In every project or deployment of Office 365, it is advised that you evaluate Office 365 regardless of whether it is for a small, medium, or large organization.

Office 365 is a suite of products that is ready to use. It comes with a basic configuration of the products, but it's necessary to deploy the featured technologies themselves, such as Exchange, SharePoint, Skype for Business, and Office. Some preparation may be required depending on the size of your organization. If it's an enterprise organization, you will probably want to integrate it with on-premises technologies, such as your Active Directory (AD).

To try out Office 365, follow the instructions to create the Office 365 trial in the following section.

Installing the Office 365 trial

Deployment

The deployment phase is a very important part in implementing Office 365. It is where you set up and start using your products based on the requirements of your organization.

When you start planning your deployment of Office 365, it is advised that you follow the best practices described in the following steps:

  1. Start of the project: This stage is initiated when the planning phase described earlier in this chapter ends and it is accepted. At this time, the project manager starts coordinating the activities of the team and starts providing feedback to the sponsor of the project.
  2. Assessment: At this stage, the planning team starts to create an inventory of all areas needed in the on-premises environment that could necessitate updates to the infrastructure. This step is essential in order to avoid problems with the deployment, and requires configuring the relevant features...

Amazon's summary of the book: "Office 365 Essentials: Get up and running with the fundamentals of Office 365"This is a deceptive statement. Unless I am delusional, that statement seems to be describing a learners manual for the newbies to Office 365. I have used the Microsoft Office Suite for several years. When I received the latest version--Office 365--there were several changes from previous versions. I needed a printed manual to allow me to take advantage of the new features. Office 365 Essentials is not that manual. It appears to be directed towards IT professionals in charge of implementing Microsoft 365 to a large organization. The back cover of the book states this quite clearly, but the promotional material in the Amazon ad does not.

Great resume of the main services in Office 365. The author doesn't detail the services but gives a very good overall experience of the main Office 365 services. This is exactly what you want in a "essentials" book! Great value for the money.

As a PM taking on a large o365 Migration I wanted to be able to understand enough about the product to allow me to understand what the technical engineers where talking about and the whole o365 thing pieced together and use it going forward as a reference book. I would recommend the book, it's easy to follow and well laid out. For the best results though you need to buy it in Kindle format and use the Amazon" Kindle Cloud Reader as there's loads of web links embedded in the book hooking into more great information.
